GH3 GH3 1.1 Firmware Released

Wow, I didn't realize we had so many knowledgable engineers and programmers here......

"..a few lines of code.."

I'm always amused with people whining about this. This is the solution, anytime you need to bring up diplay info or roll camera you can do it without actually touching the camera:

There are some aftermarket versions floating around too but I have never tried one.

The one thing I was really really hoping for with a firmware upgrade was some more functionality with the wifi remote feature, now I don't think it is going to happen in this camera model.
My left hand is using a follow focus, my right hand holding the grip on the rig, if I ever develop a third hand I'll use a trigger however.:grin:

I have thought of a work-around, I guess I could stick the trigger between my arse cheeks then squeeze when I needed the display information to reappear. :Drogar-Dolar(DBG):

Lol

I must also add how amazing it is that people on here expect perfection from a $1,200.00 camera when typically a $6,000.00 camera isn't even perfect. In fact even RED has its flaws.

As a developer myself I can tell you very little happens in a couple of lines of code.

It's likely a series of if-then statements within the firmware that hides the display information after x seconds. Not exactly the most complex programming concepts at work.

Then please forward those few lines to Panasonic and I'm sure they can drop them in. Just make sure to tell them where.

I really don't think the software complexity is preventing Panasonic from changing this. Even if the software fix was 50 lines of code instead of 5 lines of code, it's just modifying an existing feature; it's not changing the framework or adding a new feature. I suspect this is something that's off Panny's radar. Do they even perceive this as something people want? Are they really getting a lot of feedback from the general user? Or maybe they're just trying to get us to buy the dang remote?

It's not a question of complexity. Any system has finite resources. The trick is to balance the minutiae with the whole. Just because the commands are simple doesn't mean that inserting them won't tax the system in other places, throwing the processing chain off.

Unless you have the ear of an actual Panasonic engineer, we won't know the answer to the issue. By all means petition the company to add this feature (notice I didn't say correct), but in the end the camera is what it is and if you can't find a work around, then it's not for you.

if the gh1 and gh2 could do it with their older hardware, you would think the gh3 would be more than capable.

i agree that no one has kicked up enough stink (like people not being able to connect to apple) for them to bump it up in their priority list. it not a matter of how hard it is to program but priority of importance. its not as if they have only one guy starting from scratch to reprogram things.

Someone said a few threads back that the display disappearing was done on purpose, to avoid OLED burnout. I don't know if that's the truth but it does suck that there's no confirmation from Panasonic.

Have any of you actually made a feature request to Panasonic? We can talk about this on here until we turn blue but it means nothing if Panasonic isn't aware of how much people want this.

Plus there may be a logical reason for timing it the way they did. Yeah maybe they could change the value of the timing rather easilly but what harm could that cause in the process? The only way Panasonic should change this is by adding an option to set the amount of time in the menu. That my friends could be a huge undertaking because that would be inventing a new feature. Not everybody may want this change and Panasonic cannot just change it to a different value to make some people happy when others may not want it changed.

Not saying the current method is optimal but honestly if you want something to be done about it talk to Panasonic. If enough of you do then perhaps Panasonic will devote the time to adding a new menu item to allow people to adjust the timing.

just posted my feedback. this might be the time for everyone to do a mass post about display, weak hotshoe, blurry evf so it gets noticed.

Perhaps headphones would be a viable solution?

I always use headphones, but I have a hard time hearing the headphone mix when I'm recording a live band or any relatively loud source.

There's just a lot of important information that disappears while recording. Maybe I have mild OCD, but I would much rather see that stuff at all time.

People would probably be just as annoyed by having burned in pixels on the screen from the display info not disappearing. The screen is OLED and is prone to burn in. I think Panasonic is just covering their butts.

If you are running a rig without a remote trigger you've already demonstrated you can think with your arse, so . . .might as well multi-task.

Yeah, I'm sorry (wasn't trying to be a wise-xxx), just thinking your ears would be more exacting than the info you're getting from that display . . . but I see your point.

Best.
