GH2VK Film Look Test

Quick film look test with the GH2VK. From the video description:

"Just a quick proof of concept test with my custom GH2 rig. Using a DOF adapter with crop mode, which gives 35mm DoF, and the added bonus of significantly reduces rolling shutter/aliasing. I've placed a layer of custom film grain on top for added affect.

Couldn't quite get the look down before the hack due to the initial mudiness of crop mode. But now, running at 46mb/s, things are finally starting to fall into place.

As a reference, I used high res frame grabs from the "Black Swan" blu ray."

Thank god. I was beginning to think I was going crazy trying to achieve something that looks like this. I'd just film the rig in front of the mirror for you, but the setup is a light hog, so I can't get any usable images from inside my bathroom. I'll try taking some photos of the individual parts later on tonight. Here's a rundown of what's going on:

-Nikon 55mm macro lens attached to GH2 body via adapter.
-SGblade attached to macro lens.
-Another, rarer, version of the Nikon 55mm macro attached to the front of the SGBlade (it's the only Nikon that can perform with a Zeiss, but costs a fraction as much).
-Everything gets put on a rails system, and I pray that nothing goes out of alignment as I shoot.

I'm trying to nail everything down on the GH2 so that I can start testing it on my Eclair (where there is very little margin for error).

dude, I have always been curious and wondered what footage would look like if you combined a 35mm adapter with M4/3. I would love to know and see more about it.

Wow, when I first got into DSLRs, I was looking everywhere for examples of footage with a 35mm dof adapter (it would seem pointless in theory, but was still very intrigued by the idea), this is the first I've ever come across it... very interesting. I'd also love to see what your rig looks like! Would you be willing to shoot a little something @ 1/40 ?

Also, just watched that second clip you put up... looks great. The motion however seemed a bit 'off' like it was sped up, which gave it a slightly more jittery feel. It wasn't anything to do with it being handheld necessarily, it might have been the shutter. Did you shoot this @1/100 or higher?

Awesome. So any good macro lens would theoretically focus on the ground glass, correct? Would the gh2's ETC mode still need to be used if you were using, say a 100mm macro?

You could do it without ETC mode, but the caveat is that the best lens to do it with is $1,500 (as opposed to $100-200 for the Nikkor), and you'd increase aliasing and jello.

I think that the speed of the clip is due to Vimeo's shoddy encoding. The original rendered file looks pretty normal to me, and the whole thing was shot at 1/50 shutter speed.

The saturation in the first half of the video is way off due to the camera being left on auto white balance, but the second half makes up for it.

The whole thing is rendered through After Effects using a bunch of Frankenstein LUT's and grain profiles, which evens out to about two minutes of render time for every one second of footage.

It's certainly not an ideal system for documentary work, but for narrative, I think it's pretty awesome. Compared to a stock GH2, the rig is a bit more cumbersome, but once you learn how to hold and balance it, it becomes no more difficult to use than a standard shoulder mounted 2/3rds camera.

I still need to try the system out with some nice PL cine lenses, which will only make things that much easier to work with.

Holy ****! That is amazing, some of this looked like really high budget Hollywood stuff, especially with the man talking at 0:47. I really love this look you've got here! keep shootin'
