Hello to everyone,

Original topic : http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3926/my-work

My name is Valentin Deluy, I am a French DP Director (so don't be scared of my English skills) and I'm not new here, in fact it has been about one year that I read everything I possibly can on Personal-view.com and 4 years on Dvxuser.com but I never posted any topic or even commented.
So this is my first everything on both websites !

I have been working so hard for the past four years to get to my personal very top but I do not receive the gratitude that I would love to get especially from you guys, the enthusiasts !

I'm not going to talk more about my life, I'm just going to ask one question ...

What tools and more precisely what cameras do you think I have used ?

After that I'm gonna tell you why and what is the real point of this topic.

Here is some of my last projects (by ascending order of my preferences), happy watching ... (inevitably in 2K, please)

And this one for a quality / dynamic range test

picture was very nice - great 3d effects - you know the camera well and use it to best effect - on the technical side i have to give you an A +

i am not too bothered by what camera you used - great results can be achieved with most modern dslrs and good lighting - as a GH2 user i often see canon footage for example that i absolutely love - because i see contrast , color and lensing before i really notice sharpness.

i absolutely hated the content though- sorry! I am sure this stuff probably polarises audiences - i'd love to see your technique applied to some real story telling

I reckon if you did a styled out documentary on the band -the background of the members, what they stand for and their rise to fame - that would be compelling viewing - and i reckon you would do an awesome job - it might even make what they are saying easier to relate to.

Great stuff! There are so many great camera packages available that I'm not gonna hazard a guess. Rap has pretty much become universal transcending every race and culture. This is sick to the max. Just wish I knew what they are saying. I especially liked the way you used the ring light with the sunglasses in the 3rd vid. Would also dig meeting Atheena.

Thank to all for your replies!

About the content I make, I was doubting lately on why I do not make interest on what I do and the quality I deliver, and you might have said why. Don't worry I like criticism, only that makes you a better video maker!
I will soon be back on Vimeo to post content that you might have more interest in :)

haha fine, I'll bite. Sony Nex-5 or Nex-7, or AF100.

It was not the Sony Nex-5, Nex-7, AF100, or Canons dslrs  The quality of the camera I used, to me, is much better (Colors, sharpness, dynamic range, how it can hold CC, etc.).

I am going to tell you later about the lenses, settings and even tools I used if you are interested. BUT only when the majority guesses which camera it is

You say On the Personal-view link) that you used GH2.

Some of them look like GH1.

But who knows, it's all about the content :)

Yes, the last one is GH2 for Dynamic range / quality test.

Driftwood Cluster v4 (12/15 GOP variation setting) @ 640 ISO

Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 @ f/1.4 + variable ND filter

Vibrant -2 -2 -1 -2 & Night WB

Post :

Gamma +2 & a little Colorista II

Canon DSLR. I'll say the 7D.

No Canon dslrs ..
I have never seen quality slowmo from them.
1080p (23,976 - 30) looks like less then real 720p
720p (50 - 60) is not even usable for me. Aliasing, moire and weird in camera sharpen is all around (shallow depth of field is your friend in this case).

Please keep in mind that Youtube compression is really destructive !

GH2/G13 with nokton 0.95 :D i.e. Loup Vuitton ?

Very good @Moxrox  !! GH2 with Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 @ f/0.95
This lens does a unique look a little blurry / glowy (Can I say glowy ? :s ) wide open, that's why I close it down to f/1.4 now.

But it seems that the new Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f/0.95 is actually sharp and not glowy wide open, so it might be a very good lens to have !

What is it about the GH2 and those weird lines that show up randomly... Video #1, 0:19, 0:24-27, 0:47-0:49....
it's a dead give away to me after having worked with them. I love the added resolution, but those sensor artifacts, even on the hacked cameras kill the shot to me. Whenever you have an artifact on screen any viewer stops being a consumer, and starts producing your work in their heads. I was digging the composition, and lighting, but those artifacts make me think "how important is your content that they only warrant a $600.00 camera with random, highly visible artifacts?" And why you would have a strobe light on CMOS sensor....?

Here's a question I generally do want an aswer to. What makes this happen? With my GH2 I have shot great images with no artifacts. Then I'll be reviewing my shoot under the same settings and lenses and there will be weird issues. Those lines, they look like a motion problem with the CMOS scan, but appear in places with little camera movement as well. Then there was the interview I shot with the GH2 with my standard settings only to see a rolling line that reminded me of an old CRT screen that was ready for the dump... a darker oval shaped line scanning up and down the frame, very noticeable when you scrub through the footage quickly in FCP? What is making this happen, and is there a way to avoid it? Well a way besides using the GH2 as the toy/ backup/ hero cam and making sure the shots I need are taken on the AF/ DSLR's/ and rentals. I even noticed those motion lines on the GH2 feature film trailer.

DCT, are you talking about the flares? Those are the only thing I see at any of the time code positions you mentioned. Nothing to do with the camera.. that's all light striking the lens.

You are mentioning multiples problems.
The line appears at high iso and/or high shutter speed.
If you must use high iso try using low shutter speed like 1/50 or even 1/25 on something very stable (tripod, slider, ?).
I do not recommend going a lot past 1600 iso on the GH2. The only two iso I use is 640 and 1250, never over, because the higher you go and less dynamic range and more noise you will get so less sharpness (except on projects that requires BW, 12800 iso is grainy but usable)

But I think your problem is more coming from the lights you use, because cheap ones will get you weird flicker/strobe effect in yellow colors sometimes.

Underexposed ? Use lights ! And switch off the cheap ones.

There is also what we call iso bug.

Hope I have helped you !

Ha ha I don't think Arri Kits, and Kino Flo's are cheap lights.... but what I'm seeing is more apparent when light strikes the lens and with camera movement, like a cmos scan artifact, but I have seen it show up in all kinds of lighting situations, shutter speeds, and ISO's, and I never shoot over ISO800 on any Micro 4/3 camera. It's bizarre, and I have no idea how to explain it, but I see this all the time in my footage. If you can freeze frame at 1:14, his head is cocked and hand at his mouth. Where his lips part there is a line that cuts just under his lip where you can see the tip of his finger above the "artifact" then under the line the thumb is much fatter like the camera moved while the CMOS scan was taking place. Yet, it doesn't cut the whole frame even though the camera is in motion it is only 1/3rd of the frame, around his face, lips and finger. It is very apparent and hard to find in single frames, but watching the motion playback I see them everywhere, yet the same problem has never occured with other CMOS sensors/4/3 cameras shooting the same scene. If you also take a look at the ending of the film they are all over his face like 1:43 to the right of his face is dark black, then there is an "artifact line" where lens flares are cut in half and appear as half circles under the line, the top and bottom of his face are different color, yet the edges of the frame have no noticeable artifact. Maybe I'm going crazy from always staring into LCDs... it is a great camera, but this setback has always intrigued me.

DCT what you might be seeing is the way your pc processes the compression. I assume this because it has happened to me numerous times with various HD formats.

Try watching the same spot in the timeline again and see if the line shows up in the same spot...

If it does, please upload a screenshot for us.

I'm not quite understanding where you're coming from with your "$600 camera" comment. What camera would you recomend? 99.9% of the viewers never notice artifacts if the content is engaging and every viewer doesn't start processing content in their head. I've looked closely at TC locations and i can't see what you're referring to and apparently no one else can either. Since it's apparently not a constant it would appear to be uniquely located in your own hardware chain or perhaps you are just a vastly superior pixel peeper.

I'm sure if these issues were universal many more folks would have noticed and commented upon by now.
