GH2 Gh2 to 5DtoRGB just gives me audio files in Vegas 12

I am editing a short film with hacked gh2 files and it keeps crashing so I decided to convert and no matter if I convert to apple pro res or DNXHD when i carry over to vegas 11 or 12 is just brings the audio over. VLC player will play the files fine with video and audio. Any help guys?

^ this.

VLC is what you use when video won't play natively. ;)
That being said, VLC actually doesn't support DNxHD or Cineform (last I checked), so you must be transcoding to ProRes.

I found DNxHD dosn't always play nicely with Vegas, as don't many .mov based codecs (ProRes as well, however I've had better luck with that).

I've heard later versions got better, but unlike Final Cut and other Quicktime-based NLEs, I've found Vegas actually works surprisingly well with native files straight out of the GH2. There has been quite a bit of debate as to whether or not 5D2RGB is as beneficial as it is for Mac-based systems (where the gamma shift is a real legitimate issue).

I am working with about 100 gigs of gh2 mts which are fairly large (used flowmotion v2) and the system will just not respond after about 15 minutes of editing usually and I will have to force quit. I can edit MTS files from an AF100 all day with no crashes but the huge file sizes of the hacked gh2 seem to be really messing with vegas. Any tips guys? transcoding just seemed like it could be a solution. I have vegas 11 and 12.

Installed newest quicktime codecs and vegas will still only import the audio track. Now My vegas project will crash after i watch any clip from the gh2 in about 5 seconds. af100 mts files play fine. God this is driving me insane.

Yikes, yeah that's a bit of an issue. Sounds like you bit off more hack than you can chew!
What are the specs on your editing machine?

The AF100 files work fine because they have a far lower and more manageable bitrate. From what I've seen, the GH2 when pushed high enough with the hacks can actually yield more detail than the AF100. The tradeoff, as you've discovered, is that the files are much less manageable as a result.

I guess its too late now, but you probably didn't need to shoot with such a high bitrate if you are intercutting footage with an AF100. Remember, you can't hack an AF100, and while the stock codec is better than a stock GH2, a lower bitrate hack on the GH2 would probably have matched just as well and avoided much of this problem.

But, since you already shot the footage I won't dwell on that. I actually shoot with Flowmotion V2 all the time, usually in Low mode unless I think I'll really need the High. But even the few things I shot in high, Vegas version 9 handled it like a champ on my 8GB core i7 machine. I wonder if the problem is in Vegas 12, or if your machine is running out of resources too soon. Or both?

I know I already said that Vegas doesn't like quicktime formats, but it should read ProRes just fine with the latest Quicktime installed. This is going to sound like a dumb question, but you rebooted after installing it right? Do the files open in Quicktime and play properly?

Another option to try is something Windows/Vegas friendly, like Cineform. The paid version that includes NeoScene will transcode everything for you, otherwise you could get the free codec and use something else to transcode first.

I'm not intercutting with an af100 I just have completed a ton of projects with AF100 and have never had any trouble.. Also, My machine should be more than capable as it's a quad core ATI motherboard with 16 gigs of DDR3 RAM and 2 gigs of video RAM. I can edit 4k on it without much of a hassle. A few months ago I shot 3 gh2's for an event with flowmotion at 720 60p and never had any problems editing.

Yes, I did reboot after installing and Vegas will still only read Pro res as audio... and quicktime player says I need an update to play the transcoded pro res files when I open, but I'm fully updated with the new update! When I try to open in quicktime it brings me to this page to download: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d6463&csubtype=76323130

What would I download from this page to play pro res?

I am lost at this point and it's killing me.

Any other suggestions?

That doesn't make any sense to me.
I mean, the Vegas part does- if you can't open it in Quicktime, you can't open in Vegas since it relies on QT for the codecs. The question is, why can't you open it in QT?!

That part sounds more like an Apple support issue than a GH2 / Vegas one. Only time I ever had trouble importing ProRes was when I totally forgot to install QT on my laptop.

But if the MTS files are crashing Vegas with resources like that, I wonder if you are also suffering from a Vegas 12 stability problem (one of the reasons I'm sticking with 9 for now).

Here is the thing. I tried vegas 10 and 11 and it's WAY LESS stable and much slower with these GH2 mts files than 12. Twelve loads up the project so much faster and I was editing for a few hours with no lag at all the other day. Now the project just goes into "not responding" when I try to watch any of these gh2 mts files on the timeline within seconds. Something has to be causing this. Editing was going fine and now I can't do anything. I could try to reinstall or maybe some kind of setting got switched around? but I checked all my properties and they match up.

Also, yea Quicktime keeps trying to bring me to that link i put above to play the files and vegas still won't recognize the video portion. I even uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime. same thing.

There may be specific versions of QT that Vegas prefers. I don't have 12 and I'm posting from a mobile, but maybe google that up.

Sorry to hear your troubles. I'm still solidly using Vegas 10, and I just shot an event that had a solid shooting for 45mins. and then several small files all using the flowmotion2 hack and I edited it straight from the camera. No transcoding. I had no issues at all. I was even mixing it in a multi-cam timeline with two XA10s. I have been using the hack for about 6months, and never an issue with v.10. You said you had problems using the .mts files? Not sure what the issue would be, but as I said, everything has been smooth for me. Wish I knew what to tell you.
