Hello
I was thinking about shooting a timelapse of a sunrise with my gh2 but currently don't have one. I've read about people using the variable movie mode but im not sure if anintervalometer is still required?

there are other threads that spell out exactly how to do it, but till you find them I did this with the GH2. Pretty easy - stayed in the Film mode, lots of ND filters, manual focus, frame rate to 2FPS, bring into FCP and speed it up.
This is about an 70 minutes crushed down to 30 seconds.... was my 1st try.

So you shot it at 1080p24fps, then did everything in post?

Like stoneinapond said... 2 fps. You can only get to this setting when in manual focus and you obviously need a LOT of ND filters to cut down the light.

Thanks!
Was just wondering how you did the slider effect.
Also if I'm shooting a long scene with lots of light changes (midnight to noon) will this technique be feasible?

Was just wondering how you did the slider effect.

There are two ways to do that.

One is with a very expensive motorized slider that has a control mechanism that can be set to track the camera at a very slow speed.

The other cheaper but less effective method is in post.
