GH2 GH2 SD card choices

Hello

I am preparing to hack my brand new GH2. I keep reading about the SD card of choice for the 176 Driftwood hack being an 8gb 45 mb/s card. > http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004JJU6I4/ref=asc_df_B004JJU6I45926966?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B004JJU6I4

i have no experiece of shooting a GH2 but am really eager to hack away. My worry is for reliability, i need to be able to trust the camera to turn over when i press its little red button. Now 8gb on that hack is going nowhere fast. I cant be changing a card every 5 minutes. so i have seen this > http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ext...1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1314959215&sr=1-2

albeit alot more expensive, i believe it would work fine, having the same write speed.

I am wondering what cards people are using with these high bit rate hacks.

have any cards been pulled up for having issues? any advice/input whatsoever would be great.

another thought i've had is to put different hacks onto different cards. for example, the 44 mb/s EOS vanilla hack onto my class 6 kingston 16gb (although i worry this will not work either as i believe it has a write speed of 15 mb/s ) would this work? re-loading the firmware for different cards? is this too risky?

any words of advice would be great

Thanks

Actually I've read the best one to use is the Sandisk Pro 64GB 95MB/s SDXC card since it's the only one that can span. It is not a cheap card though.

What I've read is that the 64GB Pro card is the only one that spans, however the 16 and 32 weren't mentioned. I haven't tried myself.

It's there in personal-view but takes a bit of digging out - the other 95mbs cards don't span reliably because they're sdhc - the 64gb one is sdxc, and therefore faster. If you're looking for a balance of stability, good image quality and card useage, you should look at cbrandin's 44Mbps patch- you might decide you get enough bang for your buck at a lower bit rate. No doubt that nick has done something amazing with his patches though - hoping we start to see some of that work drip-feed into the 1.1 HBR firmware.

I'm able to get 100mpbs on the Transcend Class 10, tried on 3 of them and working fine on Sandisk 30mb/s 32gb cards. I haven't tried any higher hacks.

I have Sandisck Extreme 3 16GB Class 10 cards (30MB/s) and they record the 150Mbps Driftwood Quantum beta 5 hack with zero issues. The only thing I can't do is span with it. Longest shot I could get was 3 mins 52 seconds, which isn't bad for narrative work usually. I'd be more comfortable with the SDXC 95MB/s cards though.

I still find it amazing that someone who hasn’t shot with a GH2 is considering an extreme hack when reliability is critical. You haven’t even tried it yet. What makes you think that it is going to be worth loosing reliability?

My suggestion is try the camera with the stock firmware first. Just shoot something, anything and scrutinize it with a fine tooth comb. If you find issues with the output then consider hacking it and we can definitely help you choose the card, lens, and hack settings that will resolve the issues you find.

If you are really dead set on hacking and you want 100% percent reliability with all cards and all lenses in all situations then the “No adverse settings” below will get you that. If you find you need more then you need to not only pay attention to what card you buy but also what lens you use. The 14-140mm will fail at full telephoto within 8 seconds for the highest settings no matter what card you use. If you are using primes then it probably will work with the faster cards.

You can learn more about what the hack can and cannot do here.
