Can someone explain to me what AQ is (auto quantizer I'm guessing, but I don't know what that means) and what the differences are between AQ 1 and AQ 3?

guys. and all who want to start patching... all you questions are answered at personalview. You need to start reading. Look at the ptools thread.
Then get ptools. Once you do your first patch you will realize how easy and safe it is.There's a lot of info in the ptools tips help tool tips.

What patch is best for you is more complicated. To make an informed decision you have to get up to speed and know what it is
you're trying to get to.

AQ= auto quantisizer. It tells the patched firmware
what to with extra bitrate, whether to put more detail in the image
or to enhance the way motion is handled.

That's what I'm trying to do. I have been using ptools--it is fairly easy and I thank all the testers who have helped make it easier. All I was asking was what is AQ. That's it. I have been reading, but I hadn't come across a clear description of AQ. I view this forum as a safe place to ask reasonable questions.
So, thank you for your definition. As I understand it, AQ is about devoting remaining potential bitrate to detail or motion? I'm sure there's a lot more to it, but that's it in a nutshell?
