GH2 official discussion thread

The 550D/60D/7D/5D MK II do not have the processing power of the GH2 and I would just like 1080p60 like my TM700 available in my GH2.

i lost count of the trailers i edited (even without any footage)
that were far better then the movie itself...

Hi Ken,
If the original MTS file(s) would help answer your questions, I can upload a couple of them and send you the link to them. If this will help, please let me know the sections you want.
Bill

Bill, thanks, but I downloaded your entire basketball clip. It was about 560megs, but I've got a high speed connection, so it didn't take that long. When viewing that m2t file on my computer monitor, it's relatively free from any judder/stutter. But for some reason any 24p footage I've shot on any camera (including the GH2), has loads of stutter even when panning much slower than you did in the basketball footage. I see I'm not alone in observing this disparity between posted footage and footage I've shot since Roei z has seen the same thing.

This stutter is consistent whether viewing on a 23" 1920x1080 computer monitor or on my 60" Pioneer Kuro plasma. It's the strangest thing and the major reason I so much prefer 1080 60i.

so i don't get it..
the basketball footage on vimeo stutters like my 24p clips.. now downloading the big file.
Ken, you're saying you got MORE stutter than that? it's already quite a lot. can you upload a sample?

*watched the downloaded clip.. it has a certain stutter.. i think it's like my footage's stutter. not less
anyway.

Interestingly I didn't get much stutter at all on the basketball! Go figure huh? Roei z, I thought you too saw a large disparity between foootage you've shot @24p with stutter and 24p footage you've seen online without much stutter?

We're headed out shortly for a New Year's party, but I'll try to upload a clip to Vimeo that I shot @24p with my GH2.

But the short answer is a resounding 'yes', I get far more stutter than that. To my eyes it basically looks like a series of still frames stitched together. Almost headache inducing.

Happy New Year everyone!

are you sure you're shooting your stuff on 1/50 shutter? for minimum stutter?
try to check out the differences when going faster than 1/50 shutters..

Ken,
Happy New Year!
Try shooting some more 24p footage but make sure you are in the highest Cinema 24p setting (24 mbps) not the lower Cinema 24p (17 mbps) as the difference is huge interms of smooth motion as long as you film at 1/50 shutter speed. I did some tests and the 24p High setting was very nice with lots of detail whereas 24p Low was essentially identical to the 1080i GH1 footage with choppy motion. Also, I can combine 24p High with 720p 60fps in Pinnacle Studio Ultimate with a good finish product as long as I use 24p as the Project Setting to begin with. However, I cannot combine 1080i 60fps from the GH2 with the base 24p as the final product results in choppy 1080i in that portion of the project. Maybe some added de-interlacing would change this but I don't know since PU seems to conform any non basic project segments to the basic format.

Also, as I posted in another response and similar to your experiences, shooting in 1080i on the GH2 resuts in really smooth motion without choppy movements similar to shooting in 720p.

I know not many folks use Pinnacle Ultimate but that is my basic program for editing.

24p Quick examples

24p Quick examples

Thanks guys.

It's getting dark here, but I wanted to shoot a very quick clip that illustrate the stutter I'm talking about. It's certainly worse when the light is brighter and more detail is evident, but I think this gives you some idea.

well that's 24p for you, Ken.. it's the same as every 24p clip i saw. the basketball downloaded file have the same stutter.

Roei, interesting this about that basketball clip, it's not the native file. If you look at it it's actually a .mov (quicktime) file, so the guy who shot it did something to it. I can tell you that it plays very smoothly on my computer (i7 processor) and definitely more smoothly than the clips I've shot. So I'm not sure if he's done something to the clips in the editing process.

did you try different players?

listen, someone with a lot of 24p experience needs to end this question and try to help with a definite answer.
it just cannot go on like this ! :)

Roel, must be on your end, computer or something. On my computer and every person that has looked at these, no stuttering at all. The smooth pan and all of the motion really surprised me. I felt like you until I got this workflow from Phil Bloom.

hmmm...the pan shot at 00:45, stutters like all my 24p clips.

You're right, when I focus on the boat masts it's clearly visible. But when the eye is drawn to the guy walking, you kind of ignore it. If we get some sun around here tomorrow, I'm going to try some additional, brighter 24p shots.

It's not the end of the world since I'll probably prefer the fluid motion of 1080i anyway. I never had that option with my GH1, so it's a huge step forward!

Larry, what workflow is that? Are you saying that 24p clips straight from the camera do show the motion stutter and you're minimizing it in post?

You're right, when I focus on the boat masts it's clearly visible. But when the eye is drawn to the guy walking, you kind of ignore it.

And there lies most of the answers to 24p footage. If there was a shallower DOF to that shot with less contrasty surroundings you would have seen no stutter at all. I see the same stutter on that pan as most native 24p stuff. It is less distracting with a moving subject kept relative in the frame. Your backyard footage is a pretty fast pan for 24p with deep dof, high contrasty image.....the worst possible scenario.
The whole 24p motion subject is a constant never ending debate on the internet. Just Google "camera panning 24p" and you will find thousands of posts from all different capture devices and playback monitors with varying results. There are so many variables, shutter speed, dof, does the playback device have motion processing enabled etc etc. There are many interesting articles out there, including this one:
