GH2 official discussion thread

Does on mine. Are you sure you're in manual focus mode? :)

I really don't like the new lever/dial setup for focus mode. It's hard to set and get a sense of what you've done without either actually looking at the dial or the LCD. It was much easier with the GH1, IMO.

Yep, the little white dot is set on MF. When I press the left arrow I get the screen where you can choose Standard or other film attributes, and plus and minus contrast, etc. But it seems to me this worked regardless of the setting on the GH1.
When I press the Menu/set button, I get the setup screen (I am on Camera) Film Mode, etc, page 1 of 5. I tried this with the camera set to P,A,S, M and the little camera icon that get me to 24P. I have the camera set to ON, Shoot without lens, but I tried it with this off too. I ordered another one for my daughter, and I’ll try that one when it arrives. It is frustrating because this is something I used all the time with my GH1 - especially with the 25 mm f0.95 lens, which I love. The focus is critical with this lens, so opening the LCD and focusing there, then closing it and placing it to your eye changes the focus distance. Not good. Plus it is very slow to do.
The firmware is 1.0.
Am I missing something that is obvious to others?
Thanks,
Bill

OK, I read the instruction book (page 84). Press and hold the Q.Menu button until the little yellow square appears, then press the Menu/Set button, and Presto! It works. I wonder why other GH2 cameras work like the GH1? Thanks for helping.

Bill or anyone- I've got a GH2 (love it!), but when I try to memorize the ETC setting in one of the three Custom modes, the setting will not stick if the ETC setting is set to 'off' in the P mode. So I set it to 'on' in Custom 1 and it's fine as long as I stay in Custom 1, but as soon as I return to the P mode (where it's set to off) and then return to Custom 1, the setting for ETC is now off in Custom 1. The setting just doesn't stick and I'm under the impression that it should.

Anyone have any ideas?

P.S. Never mind, dumb dumb found out what he was doing wrong. I wasn't overwriting the data previously stored in that memory slot.

I also would suspect that you must have still had AF enabled somehow. I did the same thing, shot the moon in 720p mode in extended tele on the 100-300, and the results were just fantastic.

Barry,
I assume you had the camera mounted on a tripod based on the steadyness of the video, but was the OIS turned off? I found on my e-620 with the Oly 70-300 mounted and placed on a tipod it still looked better with the IS on even with a timer release.

I made a couple of quick AF tracking tests with the GH2 the other day, and I thought some of you who have wondered how it works might like to see them.

High school basketball game, GH2, 14-140, ISO 2500. I was shooting stills at ISO6400 and f2.8, but I brought the GH2 along and took a few minutes of video to see how the camera worked in these conditions. I used 24P, 50th sec and ISO2500. I think the 30 fps, or 720/60P would be better for this much motion, but the AF seemed to do a good job, and the video is amazingly clean at ISO 2500.

Running dogs tax an AF system more than any subject I know. I have not tried birds in flight, so that may be a rival, but no human sports even come close to presenting the AF tracking challenge that fast moving dogs present. That said, the greatest difficultly comes when they are running straight at the camera, because their heads are moving all over the frame, and if their eyes are not in focus, the image is unusable. Here there is more lateral movement, but they are still moving toward and away from the camera.

Perhaps someone can explain this to me. Every camera I've tried, including the GH2, that has 24p capability, shows a really bad motion judder on my 60" Pioneer Kuro plasma. Even when viewing on my 1920X1080 computer monitor, the stutter is disturbing.

Yet when I view videos like these above, the motion appears relatively smooth. Why is that everything I've ever shot at 24p never ever displays motion this smoothly. Additionally, the basketball video certainly contained fast action along with fast panning. I've tried panning much slower than that and still get motion stutter much worse than that.

Color me befuddled!

+1 on this too - someone said it has something to do with the monitor itself (60 hrz makes more judder on 24p)..
but then again you watch those vimeo clips and they look smoother.. i feel this way too. but the original footage of all those clips might look the same.
have you tried downloading the original MTS of some clip you liked and watch it on your monitor ?

Roei z, I'll have to give that a try. As you probably know, most of these clips don't have an associated, original m2t file to go along with it. But hey, I'm glad I'm not the only guy racking his brains trying to figure this out! Sometimes I wonder if Vimeo and other file sharers don't do something to the video that somehow removes the judder/stutter.

i came to the conclusion that when i watch my original (or others) mts files on my regular 60hrz monitor, the judder is the most "aggressive"..
but it does look smoother when i watch it on my streamer to the projector..
if you'll try to watch it on a real 24p monitor i'm sure you'll see it more natural and smooth.
i THINK that's the main reason. but it doesn't explain the vimeo/youtube stuff.
any other suggestions?

Stefanos, that's about Canon cams. This is the Panasonic GH2 forum and that hack won't work on Panasonic cams because it's developed for Canon cams. Also if I'm not happy with the 30 minute shot limit of GH2 PAL cams, why would I be excited about a 6 second shot limit when shooting in 4K? I might as well take 144 stills.

RieniO, I know it hasn't really got anything to do with panasonics, I just thought it might be worth mentioning because at that pricepoint, if anything about that rumour is true which I highly doubt, it will inevitably compete with the GH2 sales when it comes to narrative filmakers, and you will see thousands of people flocking to buy a T2i, which would sadden me in a way cause i'm more of a panasonic fan. Now, concerning the durations of the 4K,2K bursts etc, assuming they would be any good, I can think of many reasons I would be excited about but it's not worth outlining them since it would be based on meaningless speculation, so it's best to leave it at that, cause it's probably BS anyways.

Definitely BS, from a technical standpoint there is so much in those rumours which are impossible and just plain lies. If you want to discuss it further do so in the Canon side of the forums

Oh well, I downloaded the basketball video and got the same relatively smooth motion...motion that's far better than any 24p footage I've ever shot (GH2 or otherwise).

So I remain very confused.

Stefanos, I worked with GH1s and a Canon 7D the past year and even though I find the 7D codec better, the Canons have other practical limitations for shooting video that aren't fixed by this hack. If this hack is not a hoax than the good thing is that they might be able to do the same to other cams in the future. I wonder how software can overcome overheating problems (which are a fysical issue) though, which makes me lean towards thinking it's a hoax. It's best to follow developments in the Canon forum or discuss it in a general DSLR forum.

itsdonny: watching the eyepatch video now and it's amazing. I have a GH2 now and my AF101 will arrive next week. So my GH1s and 7D probably go to ebay soon, I only keep the Canon lens to put on my Panasonics using the Birger adapter. The 7D is twice as heavy as a GH1/2 by the way, nobody ever mentions that.

Which basketball clip?

mmm.. can anyone comment on that?
It's a question that's not answered yet.

Hi everyone, what do you guys think about this http://philipbloom.net/2010/12/30/shoot-2k-3k-and-4k-on-the-canon-550d-t2i-coming-in-2-weeks/
? I am new here and I've been following this gigantic thread from the beginning, and I know it's a bit out of topic but I couldn't resist the temptation of sparking a few chuckles and what not,
so forgive me all you guys and vitaliy

With about 90% probability it is just some strange guy with completely unfounded stuff.
With 10% probability it is scaled up "4k" that holds few seconds until buffer is full.
175mb/s seems unreasonable, as ML development thread test results show that even 75mb/s is pretty unstable.
All other stuff like rolling shutter fix, ect, looks like they are made by an idiot.

Hi Ken,
If the original MTS file(s) would help answer your questions, I can upload a couple of them and send you the link to them. If this will help, please let me know the sections you want.

but i wonder whether you also see judder differences between playing the original mts and after editing..
