GH2 official discussion thread

That is really nice James! Amazing the difference carrying a slider along makes.

What tripod, head and slider are you taking with you on walks?

Thanks,

Bill

Thank you for the comments, I'm just using a Glidetrack with the rotating legs on the end and a cheap Manfrotto head. A while ago I decided it wasn't much fun lugging a tripod around everywhere, especially if it was for personal projects, so I fashioned a shoulder strap onto the slider to carry it about. It's much easier on the back!

On my walks, I can simply put the slider on the floor or a raised surface and attach my camera, get the shot, take the camera off and continue walking. Occasionally I'll prop the slider up against a wall or tree to get a vertical sliding shot just to vary things a little bit.

I'm miffed about the Youtube/Vimeo quality, there's a ton of detail in the wide shots that gets lost in their encoding. I use the same library (x264) to encode my videos, but I'm able to get much better results at similar bit-rates. It's a shame, but then I'm only encoding one video at a time, no doubt there are a few compromises in play for these big video sites!

Off topic, but did you notice some official videos on youtube are much sharper even though the bitrates are the same. it's like they can upload a custom encode that doesn't get autoreencoded by youtube. I wonder if us normal users can do this

A little confused with all the threads (newbie), but, Vitaliy, is/will the GH2 be better for video than the GH13. I want to buy 1 camera, mainly for video. I know the GH1 is cheaper, but if money were no object, and between these two cameras, which one would you buy? Thanks!

As I understand it's a combination of pre-processing and the type of content. Pre-processing to remove random noise and grain will make the video much easier to encode - it's what I did with my video to a certain degree, even shots at ISO 160 will exhibit some background noise. The idea is that you hand Youtube and other sites a super-clean video file for them to encode.

When I say the type of content, I mean in terms of the video complexity. If you have a lot of shallow DOF and/or static shots, they are much easier to encode with a limited number of bits. Highly-detailed and fast action shots are a bit tougher, and can end up looking softer, and in the case of fast movement, macroblocking can be a big issue.

What I don't understand is that, regardless of how I mux the video and audio, Youtube still sees my container as a "MOV" - it's not, I try not to touch Apple's H264 implementation if I can help it! I just wonder if it's having an effect on the encoding process..

Also, the tele-extension mode on the GH2 rocks, no doubt about it. I often have a problem using my OM Zuiko 300mm in video mode with a tripod because it's so damn heavy! Because of tele-extension I can now use my very light 135mm and still get close to wildlife and other objects of interest. Very handy!

please help

please help

Reputable dvxforum members could email me for instructions.

wow, so sorry that I don't qualify to be a respected user:crybaby:... I am a complete newbie and only got here thanks to other folks talking about Vitaly's possible language change for the GH2. I live in Japan, so I couldn't but order one here, but I absolutely can't work with the Japanese menu. So I have to say please, please, please, please Vitaly, be so kind and share with me the secret of turning my Japanized GH2 into a useful tool:love4:....please!

I wonder, if Vitaly should be too busy, is there anyone who got the English language GH2 and could upload somewhere the firmware and if the doomed ones like me could download and install it, would this work?

m(_ _)m

thank you so much for any help...

Does GH2's autofocus act more responsively while recording 50i/60i compared to 24p, due to more data per second?
The reason I ask is you can dial the video capture framerate all the way down to 2p, but must be in manual focus below 24p.

Also, has anyone got AF+MF to work using the AF Lock button rather than half-pressed shutter release? How?

Not perfekt, i know, i will update the videofile tomorror.

Isochart GH2 - out of cam, you can download the original file.

so why did i buy the GH2 for ?

You probably bought a GH2 because it's relatively inexpensive and has 35mm cinema film-sized DOF. ;-)

In the comparison videos I've seen online, the GH2's CMOS rolling shutter artifacts (24p or otherwise) look very similar to the other HD-video capable DSLRs, because they all have relatively big CMOS sensors & electronics optimized for stills, not video.

The bottom line is: Don't wave a DSLR camera around like a madman while shooting video, or, if you really must shoot that kind of video, the current solution is to use a CCD-based camcorder or a much, much more expensive CMOS video camera, not a DSLR.

Agree, and would further elaborate that 24p doesn't really suit run and gun/home movies. Or at least in comparison with 50/60 i/p. If you've gotta go beserk, then crank the frame rate, as it'd look a bit funky on a cine camera too.

Agreed that the rolling shutter at 24p is not good in the GH2.

But I for example cannot understad, why one wants to film in 24p with th GH2.
I just do not like the 24p judder (stuttery motion), which is NOT the same as in the cinema.

Maybe other like it, I don't

So I do not know, why you bought the Gh2 :)

oh no!!
don't start with the judder..
i already asked everywhere if it's the same as cinema, and everyone reassured me it IS the same,
just depends on how you shoot.. (and on what monitor you watch!! on my projector it's far less juddery than on my pc monitor)

It is exactly the same.
Or how do movies look like on you television? Different than in the cinema?
Even if there is a difference between the multiplication of Pictures in the cinema and on a TV, what has this to do with the GH2?
The GH2 does exactly the same as a RED, ALEXA, Sony F35 and any other digital movie camera.

Technically you may be right.
I can only judge from my personal feeling.
I NEVER had the feeling, that in the cinema or in movies, that are shown on TV there is judder in the motion.
With every 24p or 25p I see from DSLRs, after 1 second I have the impression: there is judder.
Granted, I see them on the computer screen.
Maybe it would not be the same on the TV.
I just feel much more comfortable with the smooth motion of 720 or 108050i.
And the shallow DoF I can achieve there with the right lens as well.
But, this is just my personal subjective opinion.
