GH2 official discussion thread

Hi Guys. My little Test of the GH2...

This is really nicely done indeed.. So much flow and style. Can you tell us some more about this. Where you shot it... what else you used and such. I notice a bit of camera shake that's slightly distracting but it's to be expected and could be eliminated with smooth cam...

MAN...THERE ARE SOME REALLY REALLY TALENTED FILMMAKERS ON THIS FORUM!!! Thanks for sharing!

Some more tests

Some more tests

Got the time to do a few tests against my 7D the loaned GH2 I got from Canada destroyed the 7D in detail handling. Still however the Canon codec is stronger IMO. I really hope the GH2 is hacked to deliver on it's full potential!

Part 1

part 2

Part 3

And some banding tests which I didn't find. The GH2 is clean from lines even at ISO 3200. That copy I got was very good, it was hard to give it back! :(

Thanks for sharing your tests! A few comments:

(1) For the rolling shutter, can you mount one camera over the other and point it at a line up the wall, make sure the sensor distances are the same and the appropriate focal length so the FoV is the same, then pan it back and forth. With this, you can take a still of both into photoshop (make sure you align the footage with a clap) and measure the slant between them. This is a VERY easy and accurate way of figuring out which has more rolling shutter. Given the difference in the pan speeds, it was REALLY hard to tell which is better or worse.

(2) For the banding, did you cycle through the shutter speed? Every report says that it shows up starting at 1/50 and faster, but nothing at 1/30.

Hello,

good and bad news about the AF-Tracking mode.
The good news is, that I got a call from the Panasonic manager who I talked to yesterday.
The bad news is, that has confirmed information from Japan, that this feature has been taken out of Firmware 1.0.

The good news is again, that he says he will try to tell Panasonic, what could be be done to re-implement it again.

Perhaps you should contact Panasonic in your country to also sak for this feature, so that it may be back in the GH2 in the future.

This feature is advertised on the global site

http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh2/control.html

"Touch the screen, and the DMC-GH2 locks on and automatically "tracks" the subject as it moves, keeping on adjusting the focus settings for best results."
"Touch AF can be activated on the DMC-GH2 even in movie recording. This function quickly focuses on moving subjects, and also enables professional-like rack focusing"

I'm very disappointed! and will follow up with a complaint to Panasonic. Hopefully this will be resolved in our favour, It certainly is one of the features that helped make the GH2 appealing to me.

Does the G2 have AF tracking in live video mode?

This could help get a firmware into the hands of Vitaliy.... we should set up some kind of petition.

Works in photo mode. This quote does not say anything, that it works in video mode too.

This is working.
This is the "Touch-Autofocus" and it works while filming.

The AF-Tracking, where you set the focus on an object and the AF-Tracking follows the object around does not work during movie taking. But I do not see this advertised on the page you linked.

Yes, please call Panasonic because of the AF-Tracking.
Would be great to have this feature in move mode.

I think yes, but the G2 does not have some other features.

They definitely should put it back.

So does this mean there is no camcorder-style autofocus for run & gun shooting? I thought this was going to be one of the main selling features that distinguished the GH2 from other video SLRs. (Or are we talking just about face-recognition tracking auto focus?)

Hi Guys. My little Test of the GH2...
Amazing footage. You almost made me decide in getting the GH2 ^^

I am however a bit unshure, because of the lack of 1080p25, as I live in a PAL country, but then again. Alot of Hollywood productions are shot in 24p and conformed to 25p for TV anyways, so I guess that would be fine...?

Hehe, but the gh2 is really awesome, no joke.

And why you don*t make a pal speed-up of 4% to convert from 24p tu 25p? this should be no problem for you i think.
