GH2 official discussion thread

Ok, so it IS possible to touch in 1 spot and have it focus and then simply touch in another spot if you want to focus on something else (WHILE RECORDING)?

To take that a step further....is it possible to touch focus (simply just touch the screen where you want to focus) and have it continuously focus in that 1 spot?

I want to use the GH2 for some club work and I that would be a really useful feature.

Yes, you can change the focus with the touch screen while recording a movie'. But the track focus feature (follow an object or face) is disabled in movie mode. As for touch focus before filming or taking a picture (standby), it doesn't work in manual focus, which is normal, but also in M mode (manual exposure). This a annoying, I don't understand why.

Hi all,
2) I found some bugs on the GH-2 rel. 1.0 PAL version. Some compatibility problem with HDMI out to LCD TV different brand from Panasonic ( LG etc.).
Last test : Seems that the problem is only in play mode > HDMI out during REC seems good.

HDMI output setting in menu do not affect modes during recording.
And most probably this bug is your TV bug. Not good EDID or something like it.

Hi im new to the forum and i am very interested in getting the panasonic gh2. i live and work in Vietnam and they broadcast in PAL and was wondering if i should buy the PAL version or can i just get the regular one? THx guys ^ ^

Try this one more time... Looking at the HDDSLR's to supplememt/compliment my FX-1 shooting packakge. Looked at the Canons but about 25-33% of my shooting is theatrical and that means the 12 min shooting limit ain't gonna work. I'd like to do a 2 camera shoot with the DSLR as lockdown and the GH2 might fit the bill. If anyone has used the GH1 or GH2 for filming plays/musicals etc. I'd love to find out the pluses and minuses. For a small (30' across) but fairly well lit stage (except when the LD decides to go for a dramatic 'dark' look) shooting from about 25' away my FX-1 is shooting between 2.4 and 3.6 with its' 1/3" imager.
Also, will 32gigs hold 2hrs @ 1080 24P? And how long will the batteries last?

I've scanned some of the forums but event work doesn't seem to be talked about as much and while i know video, the DSLR stuff is totally new to me, so any info/thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time out to answer this for me!
Sounds pretty good and the touch focus (standby) problem doesnt seem like too big of a deal.

In my GH1 I could record more than 2 hours of AVCHD video on a 16GB card.
So you should be able to record more than 4 hours on your 32 GB card.

Can't talk for the GH2 yet, but the GH1 batteries did hold that long.

Taking in account, how many people in the world have the PAL and how many have the NTSC system, PAL is the "regular" one.

If your country produces in PAL, get a GH2 in PAL.

OK, I am a step further with the AF-tracking (as it is called correctly) in video-mode problem.

I had a Panasonic manager on the phone right now and he said, it works on his GH2.
So we went through ALL menus so that we have the same settings all over and the only difference was, that I have Firmware 1.0 and he has 0.2!

And it worked on his camera!!!

So in my interpretation, it must be possible, to re-implement this feature from firmware 0.2 again to a possible 1.1 for example.
There might be reasons, why this feature was taken out of functionality in version 1.0, but at least here in Germany I could create a little bit awareness to this problem with a Panasonic manager who will take care of this problem.

I will be in contact with a technician, who is specializes in the GH2, hopefully soon, to discuss this topic further and perhaps he will receive a solution.
Maybe a firmware update????

I would ask you all to also complain at your regional Panasonic center and demand this feature, so that we get it in a firmware update to the GH2 soon.

No external mic into GH2?

No external mic into GH2?

Is my understanding correct, that you cannot use an external mic through the Zoom H4N into the GH2 or is there an adapter to make it work?

I'm brand new to making videos, so I'm sorry if I sound ignorant.

Aked, thanks for the info. I've got about a week to decide whether or not to go for this camera and the theatrical part of my work has to drive some of my considerations., as the theatrical organization will help to purchase the camera. And, I would really like a decent DSLR as well :-) This sounds like it.

You can connect the Zoom to the GH1 and GH2 but you will need an attenuator for about 25 to 30 dB.
Search other forums on this site for more information.

I want to make first a focus on somebody, and wait something interesting happens to begin recording. Same when you half press the shutter !

Salut Etienne,

For that it's better to use manual focus, preferable using a follow focus. I come from video-world and always used the push-focus on video-cams and was disappointed in the lack of push focus in the GH1 and was forced to manual focussing but once I got used to that, it's better. But manual focus is only an option when there is enough time, e.g. when you're shooting a movie. If you are shooting wildlife or news, push focus is faster and better.

Hi,

here a lowlight test between the GH13 and GH2.

Both used the same tripod, the same SD card (Panasonic 16GB, Class 10) and the same lens, the Pancace 20mm 1.7

The aperture was fully open all the time and I filmed with a shutter speed of 1/50.
Same white-balance (overcast) and both filmed in creative movie mode, M setting.
Both in filmed in soft, all settings on 0.

GH1 in FHD 1080/50 and the GH2 in FSH, 1080/50i

I tried to make the settings as comparable as possible.

I only changed the ISO.
I kept the GH1 a little lower, because it is known, that the real ISOs of the GH1 are higher.

I used the following ISO settings

GH1 - 100
GH2 - 160
GH1 - 250
GH2 - 320
GH1 - 1600
GH2 - 3200
GH1 - 640
GH2 - 3200

Wow thanks alot for that Rigs, very quick repsonse. Had to do some pixel peeping but ive downloaded the mts clip and can see the line very slighty towards the end of the clip at the top when your at highest underexposed and at fast shutters. I can see it spring up when I hear the shutter change towards the end of the clip. I cant see it at begining as I suspect it doesent show at 1/50th -100th if the scene is correctly exposed and theres no movement of the camera or of the subject. You can use iso 3200, 6400 and sometimes it wont show other times it will. So I have a feeling you might have it but maybe its not as bad. If you could point your camera at 3200 in a dark area, with plenty of noise showing and switch between 1/50th and 1/60th you could probably just see it flick up and down on your lcd, look about 3/4 of the way down form the top of your evf or lcd. People remember this is just an early sketchy technical test to see if the line actually exists on all cameras so far, whether its acceptable that it exists in certain real world conditions is upto you. By the way Rigs I seen you GH1 hacked vs GH2 test on vimeo, what do you think of the differences between them so far.

Here is a low light piece I did with the GH2. I think it held up pretty good. It looks great in MC5 and grades pretty well.

I have to say, the ISO3200 stuff I keep seeing is VERY impressive. I am AMAZING at how clean the image is. Did Panasonic just spend all their time working on ISO3200? :)

SIMPLY AMAZING! That´s easily to be mistaken as a very expensive Panasonic GH2 commercial ^^

Is the wide shot where the light flickers a stop motion animation?

The music sounds almost like Battlestar Galactica.

BTW: I bought this "rail" so I can mount my DR-100 AND can look through the EVF.
Gives you more stability, too.
