GH2 official discussion thread

Will hopfully have that cam in my handy next week, so i could be patient, still... could anyone tell me how many seconds I loose when i stop and start a recording immediatly after? the more exact, the better. Also, will that time be the same when the recording stops by itself after 29min on the PAL models? I am asking cause occasionally, i would need to take longer recordings, so its good to know how much I'd be loosing.

Anyone have any hint as to when this camera will actually be on sale in the USA (other than SOMETIME in December?)

Before Christmas??

Thanks! I have one on order when they come in...

A very small number are shipping already, I think only in the west. It seems like anyone's guess when and where they will become widespread.

Lookin at the HDDSLR's to supplememt/compliment my FX-1 shooting packakge. Looked at the Canons but about 25-33% of my shooting is theatrical and that means the 12 min shooting limit ain't gonna work. I'd like to do a 2 camera shoot with the DSLR as lockdown and the GH2 might fit the bill. If anyone has used the GH1 or GH2 for filming plays/musicals etc. I'd love to find out the pluses and minuses. For a small (30' across) but fairly well lit stage (except when the LD decides to go for a dramatic 'dark' look) shooting from about 25' away my FX-1 is shooting between 2.4 and 3.6 with its' 1/3" imager.
Also, will 32gigs hold 2hrs @ 1080 24P? And how long will the batteries last?

I've scanned some of the forums but event work doesn't seem to be talked about as much and while i know video, the DSLR stuff is totally new to me, so any info/thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Wow to be honest I find it really hard to tell from stills, but I'd guess

a) 720p60
b) 1080i60
c) 1080p24
I find it hard to guess from video as well.
Anyway, here is the answer:

I think I'd have better luck at guessing the marital arts style :) Wingchun?
No, Modern Arnis, a filipino martial art.

Thanks for taking part in the guessing.

Well I got one of them right :) Yeah, they were hard to distinguish.
Yes, absoutely

By the way, I never realized Arnis had hand to hand, I always see them practicing with sticks, staffs, knives, and swords. :) Do you know a black belt named Roland that travels around the world giving seminars?

Yes, there is lots of empty hands in Arnis.
More via PN, otherwise we are a little "off topic"

f3.5 1/50 with indoor lighting will require ISO 800 if it's a well lit room. Otherwise likely ISO 1600 will probably do. I'd say through the range of f3.5-5.6 ISO 1600 would be safe bet indoors at 1/50....which I can happily report the GH2 is excellent at.

Thanks. No moire with ISO 1600?

thanks for the footage, but-

i'm not sure it's an underexposed enough shot to see it clearly. i think i can get a shot like that without seeing the banding.

OK its a simple fix then.
Don't shoot that under exposed.

One can try to solve or fix problem s or create some.
Is the problem appearing in all modes (720, 1080/50i and 24p)?

If only it was that simple.
If you're shooting any sort of dramatic film parts of the frame are likely to be significantly underexposed.
It's a pain if it shows up in an portion of the frame.

true- that's why i wanted rigs to try a more underexposed sample

The scene I shot started out at propper exposure at 32000 - 1/30. Would you not see any banding on the lenses in lower third of the frame.
I know some people have had issues with banding and I havn't seen them with my GH2 and I certainlly have been looking for it in my clips over they last dew days.

Are we not asking to much for this or most cameras to not have issues at those low exposure levels.
I will try to post a more dramatic scene clip filmed at different iso and shutter speeds - all well under exposed.

I thought that test you did rigs was evidence enough to show that your camera does not have the same issues. I don't know how much further you can push it.

Some ergonomics disapointments

Some ergonomics disapointments

Hi,
I'm new on this forum. Already owner of a GH1(3), I received my GH2 yesterday in Belgium and just wanted to share some disappointments regarding the new ergonomics :

Against all odds, there's no possibility to focus using the touch screen; or only if you accept to automatically take the picture or begin recording at the same time...

The very nice feature of a short zoom in auto-review (present on GH1 !) has been removed. It was so useful to quickly check if the picture was correctly focus... what a dumb decision.

I undersand why the clic wheel was put at the back rather that the front; but there's a kind of protruding protection that reduces to much the portion of the wheel you actually can touch. I mean on GH1, I can turn the wheel 5 to 6 clics on one finger move, on GH2 only 2-3 clics. And you have to press a lot harder to clic. And use both hands !

There is still no push auto focus button (instantly auto focus while you're in manual mode). Very usefull in movie recording.

The crop mode cannot be directly assigned to a function button : instead you assign the dedicated menu (less convenient).

The assignation of function buttons cannot be different in camera / movie mode.

When you change speed/aperture, now there's a new kind of sliding menu that I find redundant with the indications in the bottom. It's probably a matter of taste, but I don't like not to be able to remove it as it reduces the framing area.

You cannot change speed/aperture for movies unless you're in custom movie mode (worse : the speed/aperture indications that are displayed are incorrect (no effect), so are misleading).

Generally, I preferred the GH1 rubbered finish, I find the new one very "cheap hard plastic".

But of course I feel overall positive about GH2, the most important is image quality, and this has indeed improved. Just wanted to share these first thoughts...

And sorry for my bad english !

If you disable the continuous af in movie mode and enable the af+mf you can now have push mf. Basically, select face, single or multi-af yoy push for af once then once green it stays there, even when you move your finger from the shutter button. Now, if you push focus again, once green you can move the focus ring and guess what your in MF, its very effective.

I share your concern re the rear dial, not to keen and my display button is very recessed, is yours? Also I cant enable ae lock except in CMM, a bit dissapointing. Plus, I did a sensor clean, am not sure if the banding has disappeared, seems very clean at iso3200, plus I save a 24p file as 25p and I couldnt see any issues with it, basically as per 24p.
