GH2 official discussion thread

My gh2 just showed up! It took me a second to navigate to turn on "shoot with out lens" in Japanese I found it. I just tested out a few film modes, some over and under cranking- iso adjustments and the hdmi out. Seems like a solid camera! Can't wait to shoot a real test on it- the hdmi out is amazing (no I didnt record the image from the hdmi out, just looked at it on a 1080p lcd)
But now my battery is dead... and charging : (
Great! What frame rates are reported in 1080/24p mode? 24fps or 60i?

Regarding hdmi out, I want to say it had to be 1080/60i displayed but it showed no interlacing (looked progressive), dont quote me on that though. I need to check again (damn dead battery!) Ill do a check on another LCD as soon as the battery gets charged.

What's up with the recording times? Are the US model recording times unlimited and the PAL recording times to max 29:59 minutes? What's up with that! I am getting bored by those differences... it is said they have something to do with taxes... but I would rather pay $50 more than have a crippled camera. If they can pay that tax on cheap camcorders, why can't they on a $899 camera?

And what is the max recording time in 24Mbps 24p Cinema mode? Is there a formula to calculate it?

'cause they want it as much affordable as possible.

Yes, the different european tax rates between camcorders and digital still cameras are the reason for.

Excellent news, Hunter, congrats!

FYI: Just in case you missed this, the GH2 user manual is now available in English:

We're looking forward to your cooking video! :-)

Samy's just said Panasonic is telling them 2-3 weeks now. Looks like the US GH2 could also be delayed as well as the European ones.

Hunter, since you have used the 5d, and 7d and gh1, in terms of image quality, would you say the gh2 is a step up or about the same from what you've noticed thus far?

Hunter's GH2 battery charging ............................. charging ........................... charging ............................. charging ......................... charging ........................... ;-)

Thanks Peter for the link that will come in handy!

Based on some quick shooting, I would say the GH2 is hands down as good as it gets regarding image quality in a dslr. It seems to have much more dynamic range in the highlights (which was my only real gripe about the gh1), and high iso's are great- at first glance lower (and better looking) noise than the 7d/t2i/5d ect. Seems like the real deal to me. Sharp as hell and no noticeable moire, very little aliasing (not noticeable unless pixel peeping)

Forgot to tell about great feature GH2 I didnt know about until today, when you start a recording you get a single "beep" confirmation, when you stop a recording you get a double "beep" confirmation- just like an arri film camera! This will help me out tons as Im always double checking to see if im recording (yes sometimes I think im recording when im not).

Fantastic!!!
Now we just have to interrogate the dxo guys to see what they were smoking. I really hope the highlights hold more.
This is just the kind of thing I wanted to hear for so long now.

Such a small & simple feature, but SO useful! I'm looking forward to getting this bad boy.

Any idea if you can disable the sound? Cheers

hunter, you've mentioned like one of the guys who can help us to understand the HDMI output offer. Any notice on the 1080p24 mode? Not freezing after 17 seconds of recording?

I dont have local access to an hdmi recorder so I can't test that, but I really believe the "every 17 seconds" idea to be 100% mis-information. We will see i guess.

Hunter sorry for all the questions but I have a major shoot coming up in a week and wanted to know if I ordered from japan tomorrow, how much total should i look to pay and how long would it take to get to me in the states? also can you post the link again to where you purchased. Thanks again for all the confirmation on this cam.
