GH2 official discussion thread

Still sitting on the fence among 60D or Gh2 (in Europe).

If the missing 25p are a problem, what is the process if americans create a dvd for the european market? As this happens it can't be a real hurdle or am I wrong?

What are the problems I run into with sound by using 24p?

Conversion of 24p to 25p is pretty simple, any authoring package can do it for you. Everything is just spedup by 4%, it not noticeable by most people. Music might be the most noticeable for some people if they have perfect pitch.

The HDMI live-view output is not suitable for recording use, using nanoFLASH or Ki pro, Ki pro mini, etc..
You will get one freezing image every 17 seconds. It happens because of the difference between 60 fps, which is the frame rate at which the sensor reads the light, and 59.94 fps, which is the frame rate of the HDMI output. This is the explanation I had from Panasonic.
Although you can not use it for recording, I found it great that you can view the recording image at 1920 x 1080 resolution.
The most beautiful thing about the new GH2 is that its image sensor reads at 60 fps.
So, the 60i is a real 60(59.94)i and 60p, although at 1280 x 720, is a real 60(59.94)p.
I am sure that you will do the slow motion by converting 60p to 30p soon, and you will see the difference.
The 4/3 image sensor is smaller than EOS’s, but EOS’s image sensor can read only at 30fps.

I wonder what he means by "freezing image". If that only would mean, one frame is doubled, thatd wouldnt do much harm or would it?
Bueno, i try to be patient and wait for more tests...

the lack of decent 25p for me is a killer for broadcast work

I wonder what it does in PAL then. There should be no difference.
50 is 50 and not 49,xyz.

So they did not listen to you in that regard? What a pity.
Vitaliyyyyyy......
Also no 720 HDMI output?
I wonder why they did that.

Did you bring back from Japan a PAL or an NTSC version of the GH2?
The PAL release should be soon here in Europe I hope.

Ok, but if Bloom says HDMI out 60i looks progressiv, then 50i should do so too. Assuming uncompressed HDMI out should really work, does, let's say the Atomos Ninja, record the sensor output or is it stuck to recording 50i?

EDIT: ok, he said he'll try tomorrow :)

Am I the only one getting confused by mixed 25p reports? everyone says there is no option for 25p, yet once in this thread (way back, don't remember exactly), and now from P.Bloom, I read that it's there, just not with the same 24p 24mbps bitrate. Bloom's blog: "17mb/s in 25p mode". Am I'm the only one who's confused about this?

It is pretty simple. Right now there is no concrete indication that the GH2 will support any kind of native 25p. However, there are rumors that the GH2 is delayed till mid December so that they can add 25p to it. The European user manual was released today and it doesn’t mention 25p at all.

Also Bloom’s quote was probably referring to the fact that 25p can be easily extracted from 1080i/50. However, you cannot extract the full 1080 lines of vertical resolution from it without interpolating.

Quick question, how does the 0.8x recording work? Does it repeat frames, or does it increase the sensor rate, i.e. from 24p to 30p?

If it increases the sensor rate to 30p, is it not easier (or at least better quality) to drop 5 frames per second (every 6th) to get 25p? Or would it result in a jerky mess?

I'm trying to understand, what difference there would be compared with 24p > 25p against 30p > 25p. Any ideas, or am I just full of crazy juice?

I believe that it just takes the 1080i video, removes the audio, and encodes each frame with a 1/24th of a second duration instead of the actual 1/29.97 of a second duration. You should end up with 23.976 FPS progressive video with 29.97 FPS motion and the vertical resolution will be less than what the true 1080p video is capable of.

I could be totally wrong though as I have not seen any of that footage as it comes out of the camera. I suspect that the 720p @ 60 FPS mode will be more useful for slow motion as you can totally control the output frame rate in post processing instead of being limited to 80% only.

I'm not sure. Variable movie mode is can be set at 24H or 24L quality, i.e. 1080/24p 24Mbps and 1080/24p 17Mbps, as per the manual. So I'm pretty certain, the output from camera and file with be 24p. It also states in the manual, that it increases the frames recorded, so it does sound like it's putting 30 progressive frames per second into a 24p container, of course with no audio, which is a pain.

As it's hypothetical, I supposed I'm just trying to understand which is better, 24p > 25p, or hypothetically 30p > 25p. Anyone got an opinion on that?

24 to 25. It is literally done all the time for movies. All you have to do is speed it up by that much, and it will take a couple minutes off feature length. Nbd. You'll just need to decide how you want to handle the audio.

My gh2 just showed up! It took me a second to navigate to turn on "shoot with out lens" in Japanese I found it. I just tested out a few film modes, some over and under cranking- iso adjustments and the hdmi out. Seems like a solid camera! Can't wait to shoot a real test on it- the hdmi out is amazing (no I didnt record the image from the hdmi out, just looked at it on a 1080p lcd)

But now my battery is dead... and charging : (
