GH2 official discussion thread

I wonder if this is 1080i or 1080p footage. You can’t tell very much about resolution from youtube. We need a Vimeo download of the original files.
Looks like 1080/24p footage to my eyes. Not sure if this is youtube compression or original footage, but finely textured shots (grass and trees, as well as feathery outfits on muppets are showing some yucky mud).

the low light shots of the puppets looked really bad. Like a camcorder. Why do they give these cameras out to review, who have absolutely NO talent in using a camera. I've yet to see any video footage from the GH-2 taken by anyone good? Pannys marketing people are crazy. perhaps Blooms video when its done will be the first Good example of GH-2 footage.

I for one, got hooked on the GH-1 because of Blo's video, which lead me to GH-13, and other amazing quality videos. So, Panasonic using low end people to test and release subpar video seems like they need a new PR guy. I know the good stuff will come. Eventually. But if I was Panny, I would have been sure on day one of the announcement, there would be a flood of release from top camera guys showing off its capability. Just my opinion.

I for one wish more companies would give their cameras out to people who don't know how to work around the limitations of the cameras, therefore giving a more accurate account of what kinds of things you are going to have to work around, instead of using the camera ONLY in situations where it looks great and therefore, if you aren't an expert, you have a better understanding of what you are getting into. I like that. It shows they aren't trying to bias the uses of their products.

I watched the video and really find the comments here very inflammatory and insulting to people you obviously don't even know. "knuckle dragging retards"? Maybe if you used a grown up method of communicating without resorting to name calling your responses would be taken seriously or have any merit. I think it is easy to respond to something you are unhappy with in a more civil tone, don't you?

There are circumstances where you DON'T have control of your environment that these cameras will be used. Not everything is a production.

Strangely, these guys used an automatic NLE (MuveeReveal) to cut and assemble this masterpiece. The software needed more than 9 hours processing time to produce this garbage.

After publication of this footage, I think we will get our preordered GH2s much sooner.

That puts me in a minority category then, because I thought it was OK. What's more, it's (I suspect) pretty typical of the sort of results that a majority of GH2 users will end up with.

Panasonic know their market - and it's me, and the thousands like me, who have no serious artistic aspirations, and who just want to take decent home movies.

My own opinion is that very few people *are* artists when it comes to photography or videography.

Give a man a lump of rock, a hammer, and a chisel, or paint and canvas, or a piano keyboard - and he can clearly demonstrate his artistry, if he has any.

However, give a man a sophisticated electronic gadget that needs no assistance to process the images it takes (and, in fact, could basically be used by a trained monkey, and still deliver very passable footage) and *how*, exactly, does he demonstrate his artistic prowess?

I'm a button-monkey, and absolutely not ashamed to be so. I make a few choices, press the button, and the camera does the rest.

So, I suspect, do a great many other people - it's just that some of them will insist on comparing their efforts with Turner, or Da Vinci! ;)

Button-monkeys of the world unite! - throw off those shackles of artistic pretension, and just enjoy using a nice camera!

Ya sorry about that , I have stopped foaming and got down off my soap box It was more to be taken lightly than a serious criticism and certainly .Panasonic to their credit did give their camera to Bruce Dale who is a very talented artist and has given us glimpse a what can be achieved... and soon Phillip bloom will shortly run the camera through its paces

Anyway I am Definately an believer as I just pre-orderd 2 GH2 bodies without even a real GH2 being tested anywhere...just protos... I think panasonic could use more critics (er monkeysl) lke me (LOL)...

True Framerate, but Joe Sixpack isn't reading this format, or care about rolling shutters, extended ISOs, and getting the highest bitrate from a $600 body camera.

I'm guessing those interested in this thread, are interested in getting the highest quality video, by any means from these consumer cams. Whether its for fun or for business. So, at least to this minority of customers. two weeks after the GH-2 announcement, we are yet to see any of the real goodies. Some amazing low light shots. Maybe that 120hz autofocus with face tracking, or the Digital zoom.

I think anyone selling their hacked GH1s for a GH2 before seeing or trying out the cam are nuts.
Most raw videos ive seen have a lot of lowlight breakup and mud.
This could be from the fact the cams are demo models but im getting this terrible feeling Panasonic are going to drop the ball again with the codec on this one...concentrating on 3d is not the way to go.
Argue about the current samples being 17mbs is one thing but even so its should not have these issues.
No offence to anyone but when you spend £800 on a cam you should not have to rely on someone hacking it to improve it....it should be quality out of the box to start with!
sticking with My GH1 for now until I see quality video (does not mean it has to be shot well btw just good clean footage!)

I agree, it really is annoying.

We have yet to see one really decent clip, 20 secs or so of raw footage that we can look at say yes they've moved the game forward. As it stands it could be argued they havent delivered at all on the video side, I mean 17mbs when we've all upped our cams to 30-40mbs incl 720p, this is maddening, to add insult to injury they then give us 24p only, talk about rubbing salt in the wounds. At the moment I am looking at the cam from a stills perspective on that front I think they have a game changer, faster than a DSLR in AF, the new sensor and just improved handling-build. But we know they could of given us a minimum 28mb/s option for everything, they have done it on the TM700 and GH2 has a much improved processor, so why hold back? one less sale for the AF100/TM700, I dont think so! Unfortunately it is a fact that the only way, just like last time, that we get the camera we want is to hope that Vitaily can work his magic, I sure hope he can because even more than the GH1 the GH2 as it stands is crying out for the hack to happen, this is sad on many fronts but it is the reality, I hope you Vitaily can do it otherwise there will be alot of dissapointed video users.

I got a response from videoaktiv where they say that the mud is not present in the original footage and the flash file after encoding. So it's something with the upload on youtube.
The clip is rather useless then.

It seems PANASONIC sees the GH2 primary as a marketing vehicle to sell VIERA (3D) TV sets. So to allow easy playback of the recorded footage the GH2 writes a BLU-RAY file structure to the SD card. BLU-RAY specs don't include a 28mb/s option or 1080p60. The childish 3D lens is also part of this strategy.

The 3d camcorder does 28mbs? tm750

The 3d camcorder does 28mbs? tm750

so how come that is bluray compliant and its 108050/60p too.

As far as I know the know the GH2 is 3d stills only, well f12 lens isnt very flexible anyway, outdoor only. The tm750 add-on is f3.2!!!

Panasonic have really short changed us on the GH2 video, they could of gone 28mbs across the board on all settings and added 1080p/50/60 too, madening.

Cant they post the original?

Cant they post the original?

on vimeo then, so we can download it, ask them to make them smaller in pts though? original footage if possible.
