GH2 official discussion thread

I suggest you to stop citing small part written by Philip before he double checks it. With about 90% probability actual footage is 50i.

I agree, I think he may have it wrong. However, when he does realise, being a UK film maker, I reckon he's gonna go ballistic on Panasonic.

I don´t see any 30p at 24mb/s. Seems like the eurotypes want alittle extra preferential treatment imho.

Hey newbie stop barking. Low bitrate and poor codec were already the main topics when the GH1 just came out. There have been long discussions about what improvements the GH2 should bring and better codec and higher bitrate were two of them. In this context, 17mbs for 25fps is disappointing but Mr Bloom is sorting that out for us now.

Those may have been long term complaints but recently the main bitching subject has been the lack of 25p, you can't argue with that oldie.

Well we have to deal with the 30 minute duration limit so can we get something else as compensation, please?

But you do have a point here, I guess...

Is there any reason to doubt the official specifications from the Panasonic site that points out the lack of 25p in any size?

Motion Image (AVCHD : PAL)
[Full HD] 1920×1080, 24p
[Full HD] 1920×1080, 50i (sensor output is 50p)
[HD] 1280 x 720, 50p (sensor output is 50p)

Thats it I am pulling the plug on my 2 -GH13's ....24p at 24 Mbs with b frames has got to be close to 40-50mbs on gh13 .
After reading" Flying Phil" Prelim report he seems to corroborate .. better noise floor and I need the Hdmi out whether they make it recordable or not ...

So sayonara GH13 ...

about ext tele conversion feature, i dont think theres a free meal.

for 1080, 2.6x means roughly 8 times smaller sensor area. for 720, 3.9x is roughly 16 times smaller sensor area. if iso 1600 is usable without the tele conv, the tele feature makes only iso100 or 200 usable. i.e. its usable only in good lighting condition.

i hope im wrong about this.

Potentially true, but remember the regular 1080p is the result of throwing away quite a bit of pixels. So why would Panny add the digital zoom feature, that no one was asking for, if the result was far crappier video?

So we will see. I'm just hoping a 10% crop for my C-lenses gets the vignetting out. It has to be better than cropping and zooming in After effects?

I get an average of 40mbps on my gh1(3)'s what settings are you using?

It's been quite the anticipation by me for the GH2. All ending in disappointment if Phillip Bloom's observation turns out to be the final case. Deliberately impaired HDMI out during record? Then no sale. And it's a wait for the next player who delivers - (with follow focus too). They will clean up.

What with KiPro Mini, Atmos Ninja and NanoFlash waiting the wings for a built-in market. The NanoFlash people have said it's coming. And soon. So I'll wait.

Found on the Panasonic GH2 web page:

"The DMC-GH2 is newly capable of image output via an optional mini HDMI cable to the external monitor, which is suitable for the professional image recording that requires serious confirmation of the images."

Well that tells us everything we needed to know. I guess.

Not totally sure, because further down on the page in the little box we can read:

• The HDMI output function requires the optional RP-CDHM15/CDHM30 mini HDMI cable. The output resolution of the DMC-GH2 can be selected as 1,080i, 720p or 480p (576p in PAL system). Please confirm that the TV you are connecting to has an HDMI input terminal compatible with the selected signal.

Do I read 1080 p? No. This, again, would be a real setback.

lol you cant please them all.. its a consumer cam :) i hope nobody keeps shouting at walls about ithese issues. it would be more productive to relay concerns to panasonic consumer itself than just here on these forums where they dont come.wont here you.

Well, in the Phillip Bloom blog he says: the hdmi output can be 1080p when begin the recording but not a clean image cause have the recording icon and timer on it. If it so and panasonic make a option to disable the icons information on external HDMI monitoring can we use a nice nanoflash on it, i´m correct?.

Cheers

Here is a test showing what we should expect from the new digital zoom "ext tele conversion" available in GH2.

Camera GH1, Lens Panasonic 14-140mm f/4-5.8, manual focus, daylight condition, slight underexposure.

Clip 1: OPTICAL ZOOM
Rec mode: Motion MJPEG 720p30
140mm F6.3 1/30s ISO 1600

Clip 2: DIGITAL ZOOM
Still frames in 16:9 mode (4352 x 2448 pixels), shot in a few second interval, center (1280 x 720) cropped, and put into a 30 fps timeline
40mm F6.3 1/30s ISO 1600

Result can be seen here:
