GH2 official discussion thread

looking at Panasonic Japanese website, I understand this concerning variable framerate:

80% is slow motion : 80% of captured 30fps=displayed at 24fps (first video with the horse)
200% is fast motion : they say 10sec captured is shown in 5 seconds.

So it looks like this variable framerate is a bit useless actually.

However I'm pretty excited by manual audio gain control, touch screen to focus, live HDMI, higher ISO, and Full HD 2x crop with would virtually double all my lenses !

The Japanese Panasonic site states that there is a 2GB file size limit on MJPEG recordings and the camera will stop when it hits that. To continue recording, you need to press the record button again.

"●「MotionJPEG」で動画撮影の際は、一度に記録できるファイルの最大サイズを2GBに制限しています。このため、一続きの動画は一定の時間で停止します。 カードに残り容量がある場合は、再度動画ボタンを押して動画記録を再開することができます。"

Sorry, I just looked to their tables.
So, my interpretation can be off.

This 2GB limit seems really strange now.

The crop is very interesting. It seems like a surefire way to do HD video without binning and thus aliasing. Of course it is only useful for close-ups but still a good option.

Basically it turns it into a 2/3" native HD camera. Hmm, maybe if we can get 2/3" / S16 lenses on those things thru some adapter... Or fish eye 4/3 lenses. Very interesting possibilities here. You lose the shallow DOF of course, but this could be a good option for wide shots.

Now this is going to be a sweet camera to use. Any chance for audio monitoring while recording?

I will get my second GH1 kit this week since they have dropped the price so low I almost only payd for that 14-140 lens. I'll place an order for the GH2 body for sure when it pops up in Swedish stores.

Ordered one of these too. It's stated as being a "zoom lever" but you can probably use it on the focus ring as well. :)

And sadly, I had to order a new extra battery too -- because it's different from the GH1 batteries. The specs say that there is the annoying lockout on 3rd party batteries, so we may need to wait for a firmware update and hack again.

So the main question here.. is it worth upgrading to GH2 if we have the hacked GH1 ... and maybe Vitaliy will make some more improvments to GH1 later.. some real targets for GH1 at THIS moment Vitaliy? (Yes, I can read the problems/targets thread but is there any big progress at this moment?)

EDIT: Is it worth from video quality point of view?

AVCHD
24H - 1920x1080 24p 24Mbps
24L - 1920x1080 24p 17Mbps

FSH - 1920x1080 60i 17Mbps (sensor output is 60p)
FH - 1920x1080 60i 13Mbps (sensor output is 60p)

SH - 1280x720 60p 17Mbps
H - 1280x720 60p 13Mbps

MJPEG all at 30fps
Quite underwhelming.

USA availablity is only December.

So, it looks like I'll be getting GH2 body from Japan.

P.S. Panasonic guys, I am awaiting firmware. As I can't read Japanese freely. :-)

This rather implies the codec implementation isn't great (from the HD Mag review):
"The AVCHD video compression let down the old GH-1. At 1080 24p, the data rate has been upped to 24Mbps, which should improve matters, but compression artefacts were still apparent in some footage."

I'm definitely holding on to my GH13
