Gh2 Jello

I had a 7D, my GH1 has less jello than that. I would be very surprised if the GH2 is worse than the GH1.

The funny thing about the jello: the only time it really matters is with whip pans. And to be honest, with creative work, it sometimes looks good. Not being an apologist for dslr shortcomings, but sometimes the limitations of hardware can simply be seen as a signature of the technology.

Check out the whip pan in this recent College Humor sketch (just after 0:16):

I bet 99% of the viewers never noticed the skew on that shot, and the other 0.99% probably think it was added in post on purpose. We are the remaining .01% who say "tsk tsk tsk... what a shame, that ruined the whole video!" In the end, we don't matter.

I beg to differ. Jello makes impossible to use long (ish) lenses handheld because every shake looks like the whole world is rumbling down. It is, to me, the single most important thing I'd like to see improved in the next generation of cameras from every vendor.

On the tripod, like in your piece, skew really bothers a lot less, but if I needed a camera that I can only operate on a tripod, I'd take the old BL Evolution back and not worry so much with moire, compression, and the other painful image compromises... ;)

I agree with taubkin... I never notice "skew" but the jello from handheld CMOS is 1000% worse than wobbling of a less 'skewy' camera. It immediately ruins audience connection with your film, because it looks so fake and stupid.

I think you are all talking about the same thing here...farfromsubtle just used the wrong term. I think he meant "skew" not jello. Jello is nasty....it's what I believe Kholi termed "micro jitters." The skew can be tolerated (IMO)...especially in that short p[osted above where it kinda looked like an effect. But the "micro jitters" are difficult to fix..and are un-nerving to me.

Deshaker!!!
Ha ...yeah I know. But I wish folks knew more about it because sometimes I would watch what I thought was otherwise great professional looking DSLR work only to be taken out of the experience when those jitters appear.

Ya agreed... It does take a lot of extra time to remove them so I can understand why they're out there! :)

I've tried a variety of stabilization plugins, but they never get rid of vertical shake, which looks the worst. The squishy look is just so... horrible!

Can someone post using the 1:1 tele function. It makes sense that skew would be lessened a fair bit as it doesn't run across the entire sensor. Waitaminit, I can test that. I have a GH2 sitting on the shelf. No I can't. In the middle of an all-consuming project. It's just not right is it?

Can't find the link at the moment but do a search for Hunter Richards. He posted a quick clip in black&white using this function. Not only did it show "NO" skew in his shakey hand footage....but the grain it produced looked amazingly filmic at higher ISOs. So your assumption seems to be correct.
