GH2 GH2 HDMI recording

For what I can understand there's no easy way to record 4:2:2 from GH2 HDMI output yet. Correct me if I'm wrong but for what I've been reading AviSynth is the only workaround thanks to a script developed by a fellow member (thanks for sharing!).

Now... Can members share their thoughts about what's the best solution for a near future to use the advantage of that colour space in a PAL land (1080p 25)?

1. Record with Atomos Ninja and use AviSynth and the hassle associated with it (FCP editing), or...
2. Pray for Vitally GH2 hack which seems to have some possibilities to incorporate 4:2:2 in 1080p 25

Thanks

The GH2 cannot output 4:2:2 at all.

So if it doesn't record 4:2:2 what's the buzz with HDMI recording? Just for the uncompressed footage? For what I've seen from Vimeo posts untreated footage seems much alike to AvcHD. I was hoping that all the hard work that some fellows are experiencing with AviSynth were much more compensatory in post production, namely on the grading phase.

HDMI recording isn't uncompressed, it's compressed by whatever recording technology you're using. Unless you're using an uncompressed recorder such as the Black Magic HyperShuttle or whatever it's called.

HDMI recording could potentially offer several benefits, including 4:2:2 and 10-bit, except that the GH2 doesn't output 4:2:2 and it doesn't output 10-bit. So the only thing you can really gain from it is fewer compression artifacts; some argue that the benefit is substantial, others say that it isn't worth the expense and hassle, so you'd have to make your own decision on that.

The GH2's HDMI output has a screwed-up 4:2:0 chroma that needs to be run through that AVISynth script in order to clean it up and make the footage look good. Without doing that process, I think it looks worse than AVCHD recording. If you run it through the script, it'll look as good as the AVCHD recording, and maybe better.
