GH2 Hack

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if there's an organized effort yet to get things going on the GH2 hack.

I started a similar project over at HV20.com a while back, we succeeded in making it happen -

Is there anyone that's been here long enough that's willing to sponsor (and be the piggy back holder) for the effort? That'll most definitely start attracting quality people to want to hack through...

Check out what we did on HV20: http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?20098-Official-Firmware-Hacking-Thread-(new) - 200,000 views later and alot of dedicated work by many talented folks, made it happen

I'm sure you've already noticed that the GH1 has been hacked to provide many improvements including significantly better picture quality. The project is led by Vitaliy Kiselev. Once Panasonic releases the first firmware for the GH2, a lot of the effort that went into hacking the GH1 will go to the GH2. That's if the firmware is hack-able.

I am sure people are working on it... but you want a big production first so there are plenty of bodies out there in order for it to be effective. Otherwise Panasonic will patch the hack in production and there is only a limited installed base that can use it. The iPhone dev team does the same... they wait with the release of the hack till a major release goes public, so Apple can't patch it before the public release.

Sounds good -

So basically, our job is to nag Pana to release a firmware to solve bug X
Shouldn't we be searching for bugs then :>?

Hi Soultrape, welcome to dvxuser. I actually migrated from hv20.com about 2 years ago, and I appreciated the friendly, knowledgeable, and ground-breaking discussions that took place there. I hope you find the same here, especially once the GH2 official firmware is out.

Hey Guys,

We have quite an organized effort.
And good support from many members here.

Unfortunately HV20 is also more like one man project.
I know Jolly and he is really talented guy.

We have one of the members as holder for quite a time.
Soon we'll start using dedicated account.

Yeah, it looks good.
Unfortunately HV20 and HV30 is already quite dated cameras.
Plus they are extremely hard to hack due to architecture.

Hey Soultrape, long time no see.

I ran the HV20.com hack for a while. I haven't looked at it for ages, nice to see jolly managed to get a working hack out to people.

I actually still have my HV20 but its days are numbered, my next setup will be a stereoscopic GH2 rig. A GH2 hack would be awesome.

Hey dudes :-)

I'm afraid I'm to get another 550d for now, it's around for nearly half the price of a GH2, and I need it by, well, Now, so I can't arrange one within a week time (my friend will be in the US) - so GH2 maybe down the line, when it'll be wide open and hacked, after a bazillion tests and reviews ;)

Good to see you guys over here - ^_^

Answer me this please:

As I understand things, the GH1 was hackable until Panasonic discovered how to make it unhackable. And then that was it, no amount of skill could change that.

Why then is there the least bit of optimism that the GH2 can be hacked?

Why did the later gen GH1's become un-hackable? VK, I feel like you can reverse engineer anything! haha, jk, I hope the GH2 is hackable.. Gosh, it would just be wrong if a hack created better image quality then the AF100 ; )

The main reason the new firmware is currently unhackable on new GF/GH1s is because it is not publicly released. If the guy dont have the firmware to hack then he cant hack it.
Now if anyone was able to magically rip the firmware out of the camera body...then it could happen...maybe?

Im guessing GH2 hack wont probably happen until panasonic release a firmware update...this could be a long time off....if they know that V can hack it and dont want him to...they may well not release any firmware updates....that would not be a good thing....for general consumers and those hoping for a hack.

So lets be patient. ;-)

Ooooo you got me excited already Vitaliy, will have my GH2 by that time and will be happy to help in the testing. Do you need any more testers for the G2 hack, was thinking of maybe picking up one of those bodies too.

i made some monetary donations for gh1 hack to help bring it happen and i shall make some more for gh2 hack let's do this!!

Alright, so I see. Hacking can only happen when firmware is released and that hasn't happened since the last GH1 hack. Presumably newer GH1 cameras were sold with updated firmware built in? Perhaps newer firmware that the original GH1 does not have access to?
