GH3 GH2, GH3 and G6

BTW- something not mentioned earlier, I was considering a G6 to compliment a set of GH2s I'm currently using, but just found out the HDMI does not work during filming. Strange, the Canons at least down-rezed the picture but still let you monitor externally. I'm not sure how I'd feel about being limited to the camera's LCD forever. What a strange limitation to have!

That's Panasonic doing their thing. They are masters at cropping their best products capabilities so as to force use the model they want you to. They did it several times with their DV cameras, like with the PV80, which was an excellent camera that ended up being a better and more affordable option than their DVX100. So they killed it.

That's why Panasonic is never a serious choice among broadcast companies and professionals, IMHO. Sony never does that.

They made a good product out of the G6, but they don't want it to compete with the GH3. To me it also takes the GH3 out of my options.

Sony never does that.

When I spoke to Sony at CineGear about why the FS700 doesn't have a shutter speed/angle (1/50th or 172.8*) for filming 24p in countries with 50 Hz utility frequency (without some practicals flickering) their Rep stated they don't offer this feature at that price point.

Meanwhile most any inexpensive dSLR-esque camera offers the appropriate shutter speed.

Would have bought at least three bodies, & untold accessories, had Sony decided to add a couple of lines of code to their firmware.

Sorry, I REALLY didn't mean to imply that Sony is a beauty. They are certainly not.

But Panasonic's camera department is a joke. If a product gets too good and threats another of their pro releases, they just kill the good one.

Sony and Panasonic still live in NTSC and PAL times, when ALL cameras should just forget that and go 50, 60, 24, 25, etc. That is one area where alternative firmwares can do what the manufacturers didn't have the guts to go for.

From the cases I know (because there might be others), the GH2 exceeded what it was designed to do. Recently also Canon 5D, soon probably a lot more.

Every big company out there has their agenda. Sony too.
Canon's even got their moire/aliasing thing, which they magically do something about if you reach the 5Dm3 price point. Clearly it isn't just an oversight, but purposeful design.

What's annoying is that the GH3 has some things I want that the G6 doesn't offer, and vice versa. Heck, even the GH2 had a wider FOV than either of these, and even the AF100. I'd gladly pay a bit more to have one camera with all of these features combined, but alas- Panasonic doesn't want that much of my money. :)

Well here's something I didn't know- the G6 and new GX7 might not have HDMI out during filming, but you can use the mobile app to stream live to your phone/tablet while recording!
Better than that, you can still remotely control the camera functions such as tapping on the screen to pull focus, all from the connected device. Last I heard, the GH3's connected device lost the video signal as soon as you hit record, it only worked as a preview for setting up your shots.

I'm a little annoyed to see HDMI out is disabled on these cameras, but a wireless monitor that doubles as a remote control, and I don't even need to purchase additional equipment? Not too shabby. Might be a workable alternative if the lag isn't too bad.

...around the 2 minute mark , you can plainly see the lag between the sound and picture. I've guestimated before it's about 1/4 a second, but this looks better.....maybe quite a bit less on an ipad. Not bad .

It's orders of magnitude better than the gopro app. That thing is 4 seconds on an i device and 2.5 seconds on an adroid device. A 1/4 second would be unbelievable :)

Haven't tried it on my G6 yet as I really haven't found a need to lug around a monitor and/or a phone for anything I've wanted to do. The touch screen focus, focus peaking and especially the touch zoom function before recording is truly impressive on the G6. It just downright works almost all the time, flawlessly.

Cheers,
Pete

I'm very excited about the prospect of leaving the camera unmanned and remotely viewing/controlling it from a phone. I'm imagining a multi-cam shoot with just a single operator. You could have one person behind one camera getting closeups, while the other camera is unmanned up in the back on a wide angle, attached to a tablet/phone over Wifi so the single operator can remotely control it.

Honestly, the lack of HDMI is a really bummer, but this sounds really useful!
