GH2 GH2 for Broadcast

Hey All,
I'm shooting a 30 second spot for a local news channel that recently went HD, and am a bit concerned upon seeing that the station requires 30p. I understand that the new 1.1 firmware update allows this, but I have concerns about image quality. They also want 1080i, which is the default on the GH2, correct?

The actual specs are: 29.97 (NTSC) 59.97(HD)

This will be my first time working on a broadcast spot, so if you have any tips, please do let me know.

Hmmm. You definitely want to shoot 1080i OR 720/60.

My only issue with 720/60 is that you can't run a monitor out. Wish that would get fixed, but oh well. If it were, I'd just use 720/60 hacked for it then convert to 1080/29.97

Otherwise, run the best 1080/60i you can without failures.

This was a big reason as to why I am more interested in all the patches (Driftwood) being ported over to 1.1, so I can monitor and shoot the best quality possible at 29.97 to begin with, versus interlaced 60i.

I just did the same here in Orlando for Habitat Women's Build. I shot the footage last May, 6 days, edited down to 7 mins, I just edited the best of 7 mins down to 29.9. Shot with the GH2 1080i. Here they wanted the clip on-- dvd(a data dvd) mpeg2, 1920x1080, 35 mbs, Pcm audio 24 bit 48KHZ at -20 for audio level. Which all can be done when your export the file--in Adobe anyway--I also put color bars/tone and a countdown timer at the begining. Then used Roxio to make a data dvd of the HD exported clip. I used to work for a 1080i NBC affiliate. I shot a spot using the GH1 in 1080i 29.97 with no problem. But I would guess you could also shoot 1080 24p with your GH2 and drop it into a 29.97 timeline in your NLE. We had Final Cut 7 at my station and I could drop any frame rate into the preset 1080i 29.97 timeline and have no problem. But to be safe, you can shoot with the GH2's 1080i. It just won't have the high bitrate of the 24p setting.

I would not do that. The cadence will not necessarily be smooth.

To the OP, 24p material is broadcast all the time in 29.97 (more often interlaced, not progressive, double check that spec). You can use JES deinterlacer to ADD Pulldown after you have finished the edit. It will give you the look and feel of 24p but with the proper cadence to play at 29.97.
