GH2 Crop Rolling Shutter Test

Hey everyone,

Just got my GH2 along with my new Canon 3.5mm tv lens, and thought I'd take them both out for a very brief rolling shutter test. From what little I've been able to shoot, it seems as though the crop mode, paired with a lens that is 5mm or wider, pretty much nullifies rolling shutter. It's still there, but only visible during severe whip pans (which, to me, actually adds something beneficial to that technique).

Sorry for the very unscientific nature of the test. I'll try to set up a better one next week.

Yes, I've tested the speed of the rolling shutter, and the ETC mode cuts the rolling shutter down to about half. It's extremely high performance as compared to any other camera I've tested. In normal mode there's some wiggle, but in ETC mode it's very, very good. The non-24p modes are even better.

For a 25 year old tv lens, it's quite sharp and relatively aberration free. I've mainly been using the lens for black and white footage because that, in combination with crop mode and an 800 ISO setting, pushes the GH2 right up next to tri-x 16mm film. Really cool stuff.

That's a really cool lens... Would love to see more footage shot with it. About how much does it weigh? and it's a 1.6?

It's about the size of a roll of film, and opens up all the way to f1.5. There aren't any real aperture markings, so I can just open and close it as much or as little as the scene requires. I just finished my homemade film grain process (based off of real kodak grain scans), so I'll try to test it out with the lens tomorrow and see if I can finally reach that coveted film look I've been striving after for so long.

This new crop mode really makes me rethink my abandoned c-mount adventures....thanks for this convincing test ! The jello is almost not there!!!

Well, if you're going to take up the quest again, now is the best time to do it because I foresee these television c-mount lenses (especially the wider ones) skyrocketing in price over the next few years (and this doesn't even take into consideration the RED Scarlet). I've bought nearly a dozen different c-mounts for half the price of just one Zeiss or Cooke lens, but that won't last long now.

i watched the downloaded file and the 3.5mm looks indeed very wide but not sharp at all.. even a little blurry.. at least for me.
thanks for the test !

For just standard GH2 use, this lens would definitely be a little too soft. However, since I plan on adding some grain into my footage, a soft, low contrast lens actually helps the grain settle down on top of the image a lot more naturally. Nothing gives video footage away quicker than sharpness.
