GH2 GH2 Clip Length

I bought a couple of used GH2s from Ebay. I'm new to DSLR video. I bought them specifically to avoid the common DSLR clip length limit that I've read about.

They worked flawlessly when I first got them, hacked to 44mbit, no glitches in recording.

Recently, both have begun randomly stopping recording for no reason I can discern.

The only cause I can think of is that the memory cards have degraded with use. I always format them in camera before a shoot.

I'm using Lexar cards (Platinum II 16 GB SDHC 100x Class 10) - certainly not the best available, but they worked with no issues at all at first.

Can anyone offer any tips to resolve this?

Which hack is it?

For example, with the flow motion hack you can only "span" (continuously record) in 24L, FH, and H modes. Otherwise, in 24H or HBR modes, it will stop recording after 4GB is reached. Check the info on the hack you installed and see what modes can span. You may also need to have a minimum card requirement for certain hacks.

Note that, even when it does span, the camera keeps making new files but these files need to later be joined in an editor capable of this or in a freeware program like tsmuxr. Otherwise there will be slight gaps when placed side-by-side on an editor time line or if joined without the correct process.

That is a standard thing with all AVCHD cameras, not just the GH2. Not difficult, though, once you understand how to do it.

It's the EOSHD Vanilla Patch.

  • AVCHD 1080/30/25/24p
  • 44 Mbit variable bitrate
  • AVCHD 720p/60/50p at 44Mbit
  • Maximum ISO to 12,800
  • MJPEG Anamorphic 2x 4:3 at 70Mbit 1920×720/30p
  • All menu languages
  • No 29 minute clip length limit

I'm looking for improved footage but rock solid stability, thus not using the higher bitrate hacks.

Your comments above certainly give me some new information to consider.

I'm still puzzled why it worked flawlessly at first, and has developed this behavior only recently.

Can experimenting with different hacks cause problems?

I'm not familiar with the EOSHD patches. It does say "no 29 minute clip length limit", but I don't see any mention of spanning. Maybe someone else here knows or you can ask at that site.

Your Lexar cards might not be cutting it. Sandisks are known to be suited for the hacks. So, YMMV with cards.
Another thing to consider is how detailed of a scene you are filming. If maybe you started filming outside and there were a lot of trees/data to process, it's possible it can crash the camera. One trick is to place your hand over the lens for a couple of seconds when first hitting record as it seems to prevent crashes.

If you're interested in trying the Flow Motion patch you can span in 24L and it will record a good, but not crazy, bit rate and it is unlikely to crash. (Although it's not determined yet if the Lexar cards may be problematic, even if not the right specs.)

I don't know if your cameras came hacked or you hacked them, but if you try a new patch I would first revert back to the Panasonic firmware, then do a new hack to play it safe. Read up here on what to do. (note: my sig is for GH1 only).

will premiere cs5.5 re join the spanned clips back together without issue in the flowmotion patch, Thats what I been using for a while, I just haven't hit the 4gig limit yet, But I do have a job this week that requires long record times. If premiere cs5 can't do it, i will try tsmuxr. freeware. Is that a plug in, or stand alone program?

Premiere forum should know:

tsmuxr is a stand-alone program.

I would test the spanning first, as some cards can't span at the higher bitrates. I forget to mention in my other post you can span flow motion in 24H mode using Sandisk 64GB 95MB/sec class 10 cards.
Otherwise, 24L (1920X1080/24p), FH (1920x1080/60i) or H (1280x720/60p) with class 10, 30MB/s cards.
