gh2 beats out my 5d for video

After just watching a couple vimeo clips, I half to honestly say that the color spectrum and sharpness on that gh2 will probably have me ordering from japan tomorrow. One thing that seems to be doing it for me is the organic skin tones panny is producing off this camera. If you look close, it even seems to have a nicer roll off of the whites than the af100, and certainly my 5d imo. For stills, hands down the 5d for me, but i'm starting another film in 2 weeks and must shoot with this.

Again.. you're going to be disappointed when you hit a lot of movement in complex scenes. But good luck and post some footage.

What makes you think the OP will be disappointed in complex scenes? So far every high detail shot I have seen has looked quite good. But maybe you've noticed something I haven't.

High detail scene + fast movement. so far the static stuff looks good.

i have yet to see someone shoot a high detailed scene with fast movement on the gh2 to further push the codec.

I have. I shot lots of stuff with trees, fall leaves, complex checkered shirts... lots of detailed motion all over the screen.

Codec breakup.

Mud.

Quoted for truth. This has been in every high detail, high shutter clip available so far. The codec falls apart on complex scenes exactly like the original GH1.

If you're comparing the 1080i60 mode sure, because it seems they didn't touch the encoder algorthims for that from the GH1.

But in 1080p24 modes there is alot less mud than the GH1.

I think everyone should make a big noise about the mud though, as it obvious that panasonic can give us a fix via firmware if they really wanted to

I've been trying to work out what the bitrate the GH1 would have to be to match the GH2.

There's 20% less data to encode in 24p (as it's native, not wrapped in 30i).
There's a 20% boost in encoding efficiency down to B-frames.
There's 30% more bitrate than the GH1 (at default 17Mbit).

So, for the GH1 to match the GH2's video, it would have to run at 31Mbit, if my calculations are correct. Not too shabby, really, especially as it would be 100% reliable.

:)

I am talking about a hacked GH1. I would not use a unhacked GH1 on a pro job.. way too risky. I am speaking of comparing 1080 24p modes on the hacked GH1.3 vs the GH2.... but that thread is already huge and discusses every detail check it out there:
