GH2 GH2 and Contrasty Images

Hello,

I am looking at the GH2 camera for video work and have been watching a lot of video examples posted here. My overall impression is the detail is nice but the images tend to have a very contrasty look to them. Is there enough or any setting adjustment to get a less contrasty, open/bright gamma look from this camera?

Overall, do you think the GH2 offers enough menu control to adjust the image to get different looks? Or is the GH2 the same as the Canons where you have the contrast at zero, you get what you get and have to make up the rest in post?

The custom picture profiles for my Canon 5DMKII have helped a lot. Is there any such utility for the GH2?

Thanks for your input.

The GH-2 gives you quite a bit of control over the image you record. If you are finding things to be too contrasty then you might want to try shooting in either Cinema or Smooth mode, and then adjust the CONTRAST setting to your taste. Many people like to shoot with all the image controls set to their minimum setting of -2, which produces a very "flat" looking image which you can then manipulate in post. You really need to play with the controls until you have the image quality that you like. ( everyone is different on this )

Thanks for your reply. I do not own the camera yet but am trying to find out if I would like it. I noticed you have an HMC-150 listed in your signature. How do you find the color/image of the GH2 if shot side by side with your HMC-150? The HMC is not as sharp but how is the gamma, color saturation & accuracy of the two compared?

Thanks

Prosumer video cameras have a many more image controls than consumer cameras do. I've never used both cameras for the same shoot, but I'm sure I could tweak the HMC-150 to look like my GH-2 footage if I needed to.

The custom setting based on smooth with -2 on all settings is great and very flexible. Hacking the camera will let you have an even wider amplitude for color correction.

Good luck

I use the HMC150 and the GH2 next to each other all the time. The GH2 has much better dynamic range. I notice this on every shot. It simply holds highlights better. Color reproduction is also consistently more pleasing on the GH2.

The level of "contrastyness" that the GH2 produces is highly dependent on the lens used as well. I get less contrast with my Olympust 14-54 f2.8-3.5 than with either the 14-140 or 20 panasonic lens.
