GH2 and AF-100 playing nice together.

This spot was a lot of fun. I got to use my GH2 and the AF-100 for this project. All the timelapse's were done with the GH2 and a Lumix 7-14. (Love the 7-14. Crazy cool lens!) except the first one. That was with the AF-100 and Red Pro Zoom 17-50.
Anchors were shot with the Voigtlander 25mm f 0.95. Great lens for handheld. Heck just a great lens period.
Edited on EOL'ed Final Cut Pro 7 and color graded with Magic Bullet Colorista II.

Great work as alway Eric.

I was thinking how extra cool it would be if you took a look at CC and Grade in something like Resolve.

It gives a lot more than Colorista II (IMHO)

I have recently started using it myself to "digitally light" my work. As a D.P I am enjoying the process of exploring this.

BTW - congrats on the network acceptance of your footage from such humble (but capable) tools such as we are both using for broadcast.

Beautiful stuff! What settings are you using for the AF100 daytime shots like the Balboa Park bike rider and the girl jogging. Those lenses are darn sharp. Great job!

Thanks Shooter. Coming from you your complements mean a lot to me. You do excellent work!
I enjoy color correcting a lot. At work my graphics card is a not so good. If I had a more powerful one I would switch over to Premier Pro as well. I have used Apple color and its very cool but the workflow is so different and I had a hard time getting used to it. Exporting then bringing back a new timeline. Working inside FCP is so easy. I know, lots of excuses. I should download Resolve lite and see if it will work with our Mac Pro’s but I don’t think it will keep up with it.

The AF-100 does a great job for the kind of work I do. My station doesn’t understand the technical reasons why they just know it looks good and it makes them happy.

Thanks!

The Balboa Park biker was the Tokina 7-14 and the girl jogging was a Canon 70-200 f4. I just leave the Canon at f4 and adjust ISO and ND. Works great and its a darn sharp lens.

Love it Erik- great spot!
Was the GH2 only time lapses? The b roll and anchors was all AF100?

Great grading/matching!

Thanks Chuck!

The first two shots are GH2 video. The taxi Zeiss ZF 85mm and the trolly Lumix 7-14. I shot those after I finished the time-lapse of the NBC building at night. The timelapse of the NBC building at night is so cool. It was about a 45 min. timlapse that I started around 6pm. The change from dusk to night is really cool. Unfortunately it takes to long for a promo. I should post it so you can see it as a clip.

The GH2 was shot with a high ISO so its grainy but that was what I wanted. A gritty night shot. It looks cool to me. Just love that little camera.

Eric.

You made my mind up for me.
I am relocating a large catamaran up the coast in Turkey next month with my brother-in-law, and was wondering what camera to take on the trip.
I was never thinking AF102 but I am now definitely going to take my GH2 (un hacked) and learn how to use it better.

BTW- Do have a go with Resolve Lite and worry about the workflow later. Overcome the learning curve and treat it as a tool of the D.P. I will be happy to have a chat about workflows for it sometime later but ...the promo you just did ( 17 scenes I think) would be a cake walk to do . ( I am not dissing your efforts at all but its an exciting tool that we now have in "our DP hands" so grasp ther challenge - ie. not exclusive to a multi million dollar post facility)

Shooter the GH2 is a wonderful camera even un-hacked. You can get a bit of gello in video mode if you move the camera to fast but the stills are fantastic.

OK. You and Matt got to me. I will download it and see if it will work with the Mac Pro configuration they have. I’m kinda stoked now! Thanks!

Erik hereby "Resolves" to try it out- ha ha!

I'll be watching to see how it runs on your Mac, then consider it for my Mac.

What card do you have, Erik? And you, Matt- multiple cards for Premiere?

Ha! Funny man.

I didn't have much luck getting it to work with my GeForce GT 120. Not a very advanced card. I got excited when I found CUDA drivers for it but it didn't help. at launch I get warnings about the card.

1. Display GPU is also being used for display. etc.

2. The following unsupported cards are being used.

First time opening Resolve and tried to import a XML and it crashed. Second time I was able to import XML and I get lots of warnings about GPU. i don't think my AJA card is supported for display to external monitor.

Looks like a cool program. I will mess with it.

Bummer. Oh well I tried. My system at home is more robust. A lot more! Will try it later on.

Ignore that warning Eric.

For now forget xml and simplify things - Try taking in a supported movie file and having a play.
I use movs from the Samurai or I use DPX intermediates that I output from the timeline via AME ( CS5.5 Windows)

Load a file into the Media Pool and then go straight to the Color Tab.

FWIW - my card is a QUadro FX3800 (Cuda Cores etc)

Ok. Will do. How are you monitoring your grades? Looks like AJA and Resolve wont play together.

Resolve uses a single Monitor GUI.

I use my second monitor for the scopes. My monitors are up to the task of CC grading as far as I am concerned.

Out of house facilites I use do output to external monitors from Resolve via "cards / devices" ...but the work is done in the GUI

I don't see specific supported cards for Resolve, but I guess the Quadro 4000 for Mac (CUDA) works? I hope to get one at some point.

Erik, didn't you try a Quadro 4000?

Shooter- do you use Resolve Lite or Software ($995)?

I have the 4000 at home.

From Resolve Config guide:

Graphics Processor for GUI
1x ATI Radeon HD 5770 for Mac video card or 1x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 video card or
1 x NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac video card
Graphics Processor for GPU
1x NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac video card or 1x NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 for Mac video card or 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 PCIe video card

Looks like two cards are needed.

I was reading the configuration guide and it seems you need one GUI as well as one GPU. Is this correct?

Resolve Lite for me at the moment. (Perfect for AF102 becuase of its HD max rez limitation)

I am waiting to see how Adobe Speedgrade (ex Iridas) turns out before I decide what to build my FX & grade suite based around
