Shot another music video yesterday as a DP with a combination of the 5DmkII and GH2. I went with stock firmware on the GH2 in an attempt to keep file sizes small (I've got 8tb of footage on local drives and am dangerously close to filling up a 12tb file server). I've shot a ton of projects with various firmware hacks including a couple of features, but haven't really done any comparisons with the stock firmware.
I'm really pleased by how well the footage holds up. I'm not seeing anything that bothers me at all (for the web anyway). There's some loss of detail and smearing/artifacts in a few places, but for web delivery I know I'll definitely think about the pros/cons before deciding to shoot hacked. I can't believe that the image isn't worse at roughly 16mb/sec.
All of the overcranking is the GH2, all of the 24p stuff is the 5D. I forgot how noisy the 5D gets when it heats up. I've got a stuck pixel that only shows up after a couple hours of shooting in a warm location too. As much as I love the FF aesthetic sometimes, I would definitely get rid of both my 5D and 7D if it weren't for stills work and agency clients always requesting them specifically.
The whole video is shot on sticks, a monopod, or handheld (no rig). I used a Tokina 11-16, Rokinon 35, and Canon 70-200 IS II, which is damn fun to use on the GH2 in ex tele mode (hold your breath while handling the tripod)! Lit with a bare Coollights LED-600 and CDM-150. Mostly natural light or just the LED panel handheld w/ a V-Mount battery.
As always, comments and criticism greatly appreciated!
