GH2 GH2 24p or weird strobe effect

i finally tried the next logical thing:
i imported the pan footage into avid on DNxHD codec (which is a great professional industry codec to work on for final online)
and guess what?
Avid plays the file EXCELLENT! no strobes, as it would be seen from now on - through the workflow till the finished film or whatever.
i guess you have to be very careful with watching and handling those new GH2's MTS files. what matters is the REAL output on the final sequence of your work.
don't know what you'll use the GH2 footage for, but that's my usual workflow so all is fine :)

Roei,

Is the DNxHD codec a particular version or are there variations on it? And if there are, which one do you choose?

well... first you should try Avid and decide you like it :)
the DNxHD is the official Avid HD codec. you import files to any resolution you choose (depends on offline work, disk space etc)
if you have many hours and you need offline work, you can import to DNxHD 36, that will keep the size the same as the original, and still look good for work.
for final online or to work online from start, you can import at the highest 8 bit res (DNxHD 115- of course there are more 10 bit, 12 bit options),
the file will turn 5x time bigger. but from now on it all works fluently on a decent pc, till final online finishing (when you go to After Effects or whatever).

i personally hate all other NLE's, tried CS5, Edious, and gave up. if you decide to be an Avid man, you'll thank me at the end :)

I have MC 5. Haven't installed it yet and I'm not on the fastest of computers. A decent one but not high powered. I will install soon. Thanks for the reply.

I think I will like it.

hmm, mac is out of my expertise.. :(
also, around 4 giga ram is fine...
try googling for avid forum and browse around for all the info you need.

The DNxHD codec is not only for Avid. It is free and can be used on many non-linear programs. You can find the codec online. I played around with using Vegas 10 before.

oh, sorry, i thought it was intended for Avid. Avid invented it if i'm not mistaken.
besides, if it is Avid bread & butter, you already save time when importing, why not use Avid in the first place ?
another thing, i know that while on avid, my playback finally don't strobe. wouldn't know about other NLE's.

Well DNxHD must be unique, i also converted the file to Cineform and Canopus HQ and there is no change.

i don't know what to tell you. it looks totally different than viewing it on VLC or WMP.
don't get rushed to conclusions. perhaps you just don't like 24p so much (this is REAL 24p not a fake wrapped in 60i)
maybe something in your pc or avid settings is different.. who knows?
all i know is that i am settled on my workflow, i solved this issue and i can finally put this behind.
hope that others will find Avid workflow to help on this.

Ok this it... In vlc the strobe effect is insane, in media composer dnxhd it looks better but far From good. I now have been watching a pan and some slides clips on à big Sony bravia 40 lcd Tv. I watch it direcly from the camera via Hdmi out to the tv and it looks awful just like as bad as on à computer screen. This is not acceptebale and has nothing to do abot "like 24p look" or not this is just something wrong. I also looked at 720 p 50 frps and 1080i and in this modes pans are slikes smode and no strobe effect whatsover... Barrys soulotion in ealier thread was " if you dont like it dont buy it" Well things like this is very hard to discover in the shop and Even harder to know abot When the reweviers are so positive and without menation this are they to lazy to go out From the test lab? I mean simple things like à pan or a slide it must be able better than this. If you write rewives how culd you not discover this? Is Canon 60d Having this problem to? Otherwise i go Canon its à shame casue i really like the camera apart From this.

ALL cameras running at 24fps will look like what you're seeing. It's just the limitation of 24fps, you can't get any more motion detail in there.

GH2 footage sucks

GH2 footage sucks

hello Rigby,

I could not email to you, so I am posting here hoping for answers. I do have the same problem of yours with my GH2 and there seem to be no solution but to send the unot back.
Have you tried that? Did it solve the problem?
I belive footage is unusable and the major defect is a sort of "doubling" effect the camera does when moving around or panning.. motion blur would be all right but going frame by frame into the actual footage (24p or 50p) I saw edges getting double (one lighter, one darker) when pannning or moving the camera. If there was a pole in the shooting, you get it double when panning. That to me this is no way good and there must be a defect somewhere along the line, hardware or software..
