GH2 GH2 1080p vs G3 1080i video

Hello DVXusers,

I understand the G3 films in 1080i/720p.

If you film a G3 in 1080i, providing you deinterlace every single time you edit, will the 1080i video of the G3 be the same appearance-wise as the 1080p video of the GH2?

Note: I am not looking for a technical explanation on the mathematics of how the G3 works with the confusing 50/60i to 30 fps thing, as it's not about numbers for me. I'm simply wanting to know how the 1080i video of the G3 compares visually to the naked eye against the GH2's special 24p mode.

Thanks

This video starts with menu settings on the G3 and then goes to sample video. We shot 1080 60i and output of compressor was set to progressive. I think the ceiling it shoots is 17mb/sec as opposed to 24mb/sec on the GH2. 24p is not available on the G3.

Thanks Philip. it appears the video quality of the G3 is the same as the GH2 and that it's 1080i looks the same as real 1080p. Do you agree?

Unfortunately, the G3 has not yet been hacked by Vitaliy. The latest word from him is that he expects the G3 hack to work similarly to the GF3. Since neither of these cameras include the GH2's 24p and HBR video modes, I'd only recommend them for consumer purposes.

It depends on what you're watching it on and how critical the eyes are that are watching it. A 1080p (or 720p) 42" TV or lower, to the critical eye there will be a difference, but once deinterlaced, the 1080i footage will still look very good to great to the average viewer. Now if/when you show the 1080p footage, it will just have a little more pop, a little more impressive detail and look a little better. But most people are perfectly happy looking at a 720p image, and it's not until you show them a 1080p image that they notice that 720p isn't quite what it could be.

So, bottom line, I show my stuff on my 65" 1080p plasma, and hope to be projecting my short films on a cinema projector (just local release of my short) so I absolutely feel like I need the 1080p (and extra hacked detail). If you're just showing your friends and family some vacation shots, chances are they will be blown away with what you got from your 1080i (de-interlaced of course, interlaced just screams video, at least to me) or 720p footage.

At the end of the day, though, it just comes down to who's watching.

...... and how critical the eyes are that are watching it.

IMO, Blazer's statement here is the magic answer to almost every gear related question. Content is still king. But it's your intended audience who views your work, that in the long run is going to give you a thumbs up or down on it.

Will the G3 be "just like" the GH2 ??? I doubt it. Will the G3 be "close enough that most people wouldn't know the difference"? Most likely it would. If your delivery method to your audience is online only viewing, because of the heavy online compression, I would say most people wouldn't be able to tell one from the other.

The G3 shoots 1080p @ 30 FPS just like the GH2 does in 1080p HBR mode except for the bit rate in the G3 is much lower. Once hacked the G3 will offer the same thing as the GH2's Hacked HBR mode.

Also the true 1080i/60 mode on the GH2 is the only mode that has to be deinterlaced. You should never deinterlace any of the G3 footage. Just treat it like 1080p @ 30 FPS and it will look good. It will look great once the bit rate gets upped to a more reasonable level.

It looks pretty good. I think it is 17mb/sec as opposed to 24mb/sec. It's a corner to cut to save money. It isn't 24p though, which tons of people want...

How do you de-interlace a 1080i shot on the HVX? Because I've shot in 1080i and it strobes like crazy and looks terrible. I think. How do I shoot 1080p? Or is it possible?
