GH17 Lenin hackers sound out!!

I just hacked my WE1BA Serial GH1, and I ordered a new 2011 model before the Facebook sale ran out.

Who else successfully hacked the "unhackable" GH1s? Vitaliy Rules!!!

got mine up and running... we just but it up against some RED footage.... im in love with shooting RED, but this is really really difficult to discern the difference when viewing in 1080. Still issues of color, res etc... for major theater distro, but music video and independent film... well this thing could be an A cam in those situations.

I've just hacked my GH1, now GH17... It works great, It's a 2011 made model and im getting crazy because its now hacked... Thanks very much to Vitaliy...

OK, mine's done! Installed the High Reliability Hack and it's working! Definitely looks better than unhacked, especially when pointed at foliage... much sharper and clearer. Am thinking about trying out of of the more aggressive patches just to see if there's that much difference on quality versus stability. BTW, mine is a newer model purchased a couple of months ago and was originally unhackable.

Could anyone clarify the advantages of GH17 over Gh13? What features have improved by hacking the 2011 models? I'm very curious to know!

No advantage. They are the same cameras. It's just that certain newer cameras were once not hackable but they now are which makes them equivalent to the original GH13s. In other words...this is a new Russian Revolution. :)

I'm having some trouble figuring this out. I've got pTools running on my mac under winebottler, but I don't undertand how I load:

1. Present hacks people have made into pTools
2. The firmware on the camera itself.

Also what version number should I use for the firmware when saving it since I've got a 2011 model camera?
Also should I check off "Prevent Version Compare?"

Make sure you have the newest version of Ptools installed; created 05/29/2011
You want all three boxes checked, and when you check Version Increment, there will be a little box down below that shows a green 1 change that to 10. Spend some time reading the FAQ's, as most answers to your questions are there.
good luck.
As far as loading other people's patches, just unzip in the same folder as Ptools, open up the firmware you want to hack, and you will see some letters at the bottom of the screen-the ones that have patches associated with them(the patches you downloaded), will be colored and selectable. The patches themselves, such as the Reliability Hack, are ini files, and will have names like; "setj". So, when you click on the letter J, it will load that patch onto the firmware. rename the firmware 1__33.bin, oor 1__32.bin, or whatever, and save. I don't think the number you use makes much difference, as I saved mine as 1__22.bin, 23, 24, etc, for the different patches.

Oh I see. Thanks for the information!
But, how about between the pre-2011 model that have been hackable and 2011 models or those that were once hackable? Are there any differences or improvements made in the newer ones?

Maybe. Supposedly the newer, unhackable versions had improvement to FPN, that didn't have much to do with the firmware...???? I think it's kind of a "myth" if you ask me. But, some say they see less FPN on the newer models....perhaps panny addressed some issues with the sensor.....dunno...??

Thank you for your help. I got it working and the footage looks great. Lots of detail help up in highly detailed scenes. I haven't tried loading a premade hack in there yet, just played with some of the settings myself and raise the video bitrate to 50mbps, added 4:2:2 24p mjpeg and 24pN native AVCHD.

Some generic 16GB class 10 card I got from Microcenter. Seems to be working great.

Class 10 really doesn't mean anything. that's just a marketing ploy by the card makers. It's the read/write speed listed that is the important part. for example, the transcend class10, is really only a class 6, and barely. it's read/write speed has been measured at around 12 to 20Mb/sec. Class 10 will have a read/write speed of 30Mb/second.
glad your card is working for you.

Yeah like I said it's working great. But I've only got it going at 50Mbps (44Mbps) right now. Which in all honestly is good enough for what I shoot. If I were going to shoot an indie film with this at some point in the future I would probably try the 100Mbps max latitude patch, get some more cards and test their speed. The only thing that has me a little baffled right now is the amount of record time it say I have left. It's saying nearly two hours of record time left. I was under the assumption that with over twice the bitrate it would severally cut down my record time to around an hour on this card.
