GH13s at the Boston Music Awards

Was at the Boston Music Awards last night and several of the teams of videographers were using hacked GH1s - stills guys were all Nikons and Canons but aside from one handycam style video camera all of the videographers were using GH1s for live band shooting and for interviews - several of them follow dvxuser and knew about the "For the Love of God" production - which was super cool as far as I am concerned :) - From talking to them they were shooting video for Time Out Magazine (Boston) and I think Time Out will have it on their site in the coming days in case anyone is curious.

Talking of which, how is it going?

Very well - we had a brief shooting hiatus as one of our lead actors was in a theater production that ran a month solid with no breaks - he just got finished and we're shooting 4 days straight Friday-Monday. After that we'll have about 5 more shooting days and then we wrap for about 30 shooting days total. We've actually moved away from the GH1 and will be finishing shooting with 5Dmkiis and 7Ds as we're going for a particular look for these last scenes and once we started doing tests with live monitoring it became clear that we'd just work around the weaknesses of the Canons and exploit their advantages - the live monitoring is just too helpful on set to not go that route. All in all I think the GH1 has marginally better image quality - but it's sort of splitting hairs in my opinion, they are all very good and very much in the same ballpark so long as you are careful about moire/aliasing. I also shoot pro stills for a living and got tired of having two lens systems so I sold off all the legacy glass and consolidated into Canon L glass. All in all if the GH1 had live monitoring I'd stick with it - but the advantages we get in terms of telling the story (by having live monitoring) and making sure we've got the shots (being able to check quickly while still on set) outweigh the image quality advantage of the GH1 and with the Marvels Cine Profile we're able to match Canon footage very closely to our GH13 footage.
