GH1 GH13 - Took picture, sensor looks destroyed now

So while I was walking to work this morning I whipped out my GH1 w/20mm pancake lens and tried to take a picture of a building with the sun starting to creep up from behind it. The picture came out crappy, but worse, after that snapshot my GH1 has gone crazy. It's like a permanent purple haze and the lower part of LCD (or Viewfinder) is blacked out and has purple spiking marks/waves above it. It happens even when I remove a lens and just have the camera on. So I'm almost positive the lens is fine, but something crapped out with the GH1 itself.

I guess its worth mentioning the lug that held one of the camera straps (guess what?) broke off about two weeks ago. But it hasn't affected performance at all.

A bit about the picture I took -- I wasn't directly pointing at the sun so I don't see why the camera decided to just crap out.

All I know is this, when I send this in (if I can't figure it out or if anyone here can't help) I"ll be asking for a GH2 replacement! Yeah right, like that'll happen.

In the meantime its a Canon t2i for me til this nonsense is fixed.

My friend.

You have just been one of the few GH1 non luck guys from the earth, Lol.

There are two conclusions from the picture you have provided. Or your LCD is kind of broken, (i dont think so, tho vertical noise seem to move) or your sensor actually crap out. (if the interference at the lower end of the LCD moves contanstly, there is still some signal, bad signal)and If you can provide a video of the error itself, maybe someone in the forum could help a little bit more, but no one here will be able to fix it.

Broken lugs have been known to mess with the circuitry of the GH1 and short circuit various components.

I registered the camera way back in November 2009...so unsure if its still under warranty...

Short answer? No.

But that shouldn't stop you trying to get redress on the basis that the camera has an inherent fault, and does not function in a manner that would be considered normally acceptable. There's a much better legal definition somewhere.

I'm just so disappointed with Panasonic. Esp the fact that its considered a consumer camera I'm sure they'll try to give me the runaround. Lack of native m4/3 lenses, broken lugs, GH2 short supply...when I ship this out to them I'll see if I can do a straight swap with a GH2 if I plead my case (my company uses lots of Panasonic gears...worth a shot, lol). Otherwise, expect to see a lot of m4/3 lenses and accesories coming up in the Marketplace. That includes my one week old 20mm pancake lens that I paid double price on.

This may be be a dumb question but of you looked through the EVF? Same image?

Yep, same thing. Tried different lenses. Its most def the sensor. Buying a t2i now and sending this out in the meantime. If Panasonic doesn't fix it, lenses are getting sold and turning to the dark side/Canon and their plethora of lenses for good. But hopefully the t2i will just be a temp fix thing.

Yes if the lug bounces around and bangs up against something...

I found the thread on the forum that discusses this and saw your input on this.

Such a shame. Panasonic GH1 and 2 can be such amazing cameras but Panasonic just do not finish the job/make enough bodies. Unfortunately, I see why Canon is king.

I think they have fixed it with the GH2... All cameras seem to have some sort of problem unfortunately.

True, but I realize Panasonic wasn't as much as an all in one solution as I thought. Even the t2i is more all in one solution, of course once ML is installed.

So I called Panasonic, first guy tells me he knows for a fact its a manufacturing defect and that 7 others called him with the same problem today. He cannot authorize anything though its up to the technicians discretion. Called exchange/technician center, they don't acknowledge it. They said it costs $325 to repair...its $399 brand new! And actually I was given a quote before of $275 by the customer service center...why are the technicians saying $325?

Long story short, I'm done with the m4/3 format. My lenses are being sold in the marketplace now. Disappointed.

UPDATE:

So I painstakingly took the camera apart and actually found the missing wingnut floating around (the wingnut on the otherside of the lugnut which snapped off) probably on the sensor side of the camera.

When I reassembled I still had the same problem so as they say "the damage has been done"
