GH13 Music video "In Luv With You" coming along nicely...

Still deep in editing mode on my "In Luv With You" music video shoot but it's coming along nicely. It's a modern R&B song but for the video I came up with the idea to go for a Harlem Nights meets Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Specifically the ballroom scene with Jessica Rabbit singing in WFRR)

In trying to recreate the look of a 1940s Jazz club like the scene in Who Framed Roger Rabbit mixed with a bit of Harlem Nights and then coming into modern day at the end. I had some reference frames in my head. This was one of them, but all of these other frames I looked up AFTER shooting, and I'm very happy with the results so far.

In the "In Luv With You" music video - Alina & Will are positioned as Betty Boop & Eddie in this still from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" - and as Eddie is gawking at Jessica Rabbit, so is Will gawking at LiV, and as Betty Boop touches his jaw, so does Alina grab Will's jaw:

This was on a dolly shot going past all the extras being merry at the club so there is a little motion blur. I have framing that more closely matches and is tighter in a lock down tripod insert shot.

Some more comparisons:

I was going for the look of the famous scene where Jessica sings "Why Don't You Do Right" in the cartoon club. Of course she had her back lit glow done by Industial Light & Magic.. where we just had.... "set this up as fast as you can!" magic

As I said another theme was Harlem Nights:

Which our actors got the look of pretty well, especially our bartender Caliaf who looks very much like a young Eddie Murphy:

This above shot would have been a DISASTER on a Canon or unhacked GH1 because of the detail in the vest - but it came out flawlessly.

Some more of the Harlem Nights film noir look:

And last but not least, yours truly - directing. I don't have many of these shots I like this one:

I had a hard drive failure so had to start from scatch.. which SUCKED... but thank god I had multiple backups of all the footage.. yet the project file.. like an idiot.. I did not. NOTE TO SELF: MAKE MORE BACKUPS!

I shall update you when it's completed.

Looks good! Especially that second to last pic--very film noir. My suggestions? There's always an eye light on 'persons of interest' in film noir as sort of a visual clue, especially when introduced for the first time. You can see this on the second pic of Jessica Rabbit you posted. Also, the woman sitting at the bar can really use some eye glint in that close-up to avoid the dead eye look. The pic you posted of Eddie Murphy has it. You can shine a small maglite or reflect some light off of foam core into the talent's eyes to achieve it. Otherwise this is looking great!

Yeah I agree with you on the eye light and highlight. I think I have it on some.... some of these are a little flat and may not be used in the final also not corrected yet. These were just quick grabs from the timeline that fit the frames to give the vibe. But thanks for the constructive critiques!

You can still achieve the eye glint in After Effects using tracking, though it's more time consuming.

Thanks cassel I'll look into that.

Some funny outtakes:

In this one we were waiting for the rapper Monsta Villa to show up for the shot... he was in the bathroom
for a chronic break I think.. so we started rapping for him.

The preview edit of day one of shooting, a lot of which was changed:

PS: The cool thing about my livestream setup is that I can broadcast live from anywhere with a laptop, so I broadcasted the whole 'making of' the music video live and had another lap top set up in the green room for the extras to watch in real time so they knew when they were up next. It was all pretty cool. I am still working the kinks out and it's a bit buggy and stuttery when I try to do live hd wirelessly but it works pretty well in iphone / ipad mode which is like 854 pixels or something.

Here is one part:

Then here is everything I have done in a sort of video on demand format:

Amazing technology when it works, you have a full switcher akin to a modern video toaster type setup.. which then all embeds into my website with a live chatr room and live video as well as video on demand.... so screw youtube...
