GH13/GH2 Wedding Montage

My first professional wedding/engagement video. I edited them, I shot the engagement video, and Doug Smith and I shared the shooting on the wedding video, though he was assisting the photographer so most of the shots are mine (though he had some really really great ones that made it in.) Let me know with you think! Please comment here, not on the videos themselves.

Anything slow motion is GH13, normal speed is GH2 with a couple exceptions. Shot mix of 720 and 1080p, edited in 720p.

Lenses for the engagement video were (for the most part) the 14-140mm and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. The wedding was a mix of things. Majority is probably 50mm f/1.4 but I used the 20mm f/1.7, the 14-140mm, the 7-14mm, and my Olympus Pen F 38mm f/1.8.

Had some nice shots.

But...

Do you have a monopod??? While some of the shots were ok with a little movement... with a monopod, given your shooting location, you could have gotten 'in closer' with a bit more zoom, and been a bit more stable.

I'm think of some of the shots either during the ceremony, some of the details, hand-in-hand shots, where I think you could have been in closer with zoom, but because of that, the motion would be accentuated.

Another thing you can do with a monopod, is turn it into a 'boom', and raise up above the crowd, or the 'eye level'... as a note, the Wife always liked to get a 'shot in a shot' when some onlooker was taking a photo with their 'happy shot camera', she would focus on the screen of the happy shot camera, so that would be 'sharp', but the couple were in the back ground with focus thrown out a bit...

The other item I'd suggest is most of the shots had bride and groom, or bride, or groom. One of the things that I was supposed to do as the 'second shooter', is get things outside of that scope. So, people at the event, what they are doing... (kids are always good for some ooh and aah shots...). Also because I'm the 'big format' camera person, I did get shots of the table settings, or the staff setting up the reception, caterers doing their setup, etc...

Another thing about the 'high angle', while this bride was rather attractive, for some 'larger' brides, or even thin ones, sometimes the 'from your eye level and below' the shot accentuates facial features that are less than flattering. Come form 'high', will hide a 'thick neck', or 'jawline problems'. and if such a bride just tilts their head up, it often gives a pleasing look, where as straight on may give a 'jowelly' look.

Some of these things may not work for 'moving pictures'... such as positioning the 'heftier' person behind the the thinner, or in some way 'hiding' weight and still get a pleasing shot...

But any way... good luck on future weddings...

They are tough to shoot... and because you are the last person they will probably see of the event service providers, you may get a 'garbage' dump through no fault of your own...

liked the feeling in both videos, music was a good choice. although... did you buy copyrights to use the songs commercially? I want to get into the video portion of weddings more, I dabble more in photography at the moment with weddings, but I don't have the cash to shell out bookoo cash for mainstream music. A lot of free music online is rather displeasing, so I'm not sure how I wanna go about this... any suggestions? how did you do yours.

Love the establishing shot its quite inspiring.

How much of this was choreographed it looks like you were all over the place.

A brilliant film …. You can come and do my wedding no question ….. just got to find a woman LOL.

Nice work indeed. Very cool images. The only thing that detracts and there's nothing you can do is the strobbing light rolling shutter artifacts. For this reason when I do events I bring along my HMC150 for this stuff. I'ts been the only thing about the GH2 that I don't love... and when the flashes are going off everywhere it can be downright aweful in my footage and hence why the 150 still sees some action...

Nice indeed. That opening wide shot with the 7-14 looks simply amazing and nice work on the slider stuff.
