GH13 AVCHD FHD & FCP Log & Transfer issues

Hi DVXUSER community & GH13 people,

This is my first post but I've been reading the forum for ages and have found it an invaluable resource for my work!

Maybe my question has been addressed somewhere already, in which case, COULD SOMEONE POINT ME TO THE ANSWER? Thank you in advance!

Here's my problem: I cannot Log & Transfer a specific set of .MTS Files that were shot under specific conditions with a "stable set" of new AVCHD settings.

I've decided to upgrade my GH1 with the GH13 hack using Ptool 3.36 a couple weeks ago, only for the AVCHD increased bitrate settings (no change to MJPEG) and the 1080 24PN mode.

I used the following "stable settings" as stated in the forums:
Video bitrate adjustment - 38000000
Overall bitrate adjustment - 40000000
Limiting bitrate adjustment - 42000000

My job was to film an entire take of a 1 hour live singing & dancing performance with the new settings. I used a 16GB Transcend Class 6 SD card.

For this take, I had a tripod and never changed the angle, nor zoomed, no moved my camera. It was a static shot of moving characters on a stage, with an average amount of detail. So most probably the max bitrate was never reached, and after a few tests (which I was very happy about in terms of overall much improved image quality thanks to the increased AVCHD bitrate) lasting anywhere between mins to about 20mins, I figured I could shoot for a little over an hour with the 16GB card.

On the actual 1-hour performance take I shot with the GH13 hack, after about 30mins of shooting, the initially empty card seemed to have reached its 4GB Fat32 limit, and based on what I could see in the directory structure (after I finished shooting), it created a new .MTS file with the correct numbering increment. Then it stopped about 125Mbytes later for no apparent reason. So I pushed the REC button again, and let it roll till the end of the performance which was another 4GB of space.

I went on to copy the SD card onto my HDD (the 3 MTS files I had showed "4GB, 125MB and 0GB" on Finder and SD card). I'm using a Macbook Pro and FCP 6.0.6 as my NLE. But when I copied them to my Macbook Pro (Leopard OS X), I managed to get the seemingly "correct" file size "4GB", "125MB", 4GB").

I never had issues logging and transfering with the GH13 hack and the AVCHD when I made a few tests that were much shorter in REC time length (less than 10mins usually). I could see the much improved quality and was happy to shoot with the new settings.

But with the takes I had on this actual performance shoot, when using LOG & TRANSFER on FCP, and trying to open the PRIVATE directory structure of my shoot, I get this error message :

"Warning : "PRIVATE" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."

So my problem is that I can't recover these files and L&T to ProRes 422 on FCP 6.0.6.

Does anyone know what I can do to recover these files? Is there another SW I could use to try and open these files? I tried MPEGStreamClip to open the .MTS file but it says "File Open Error : Unrecognized File Type".

Interestingly, VLC can read and play them, but FCP can't for some reason. I looked at the files and definitely was sure it was 24PN (I could see no interlacing) and could see the improved image quality, even though I felt that 4GB for 30mins wasn't that much different from the non-hacked AVCHD recording size for 30mins. My understanding was that it was shot in a church with less lighting and less high-detail, so the codec would not go that high in bit-rate... so I think there was no mistaking, especially since I had done many tests with the new hack and firmware before shooting the actual 1-hour take.

Thank you so much again for the help if you can point me to the right answer.

Cheers,

Try the Cineform NeoScene demo. You just load the .MTS files into it, no need for the directory structure FCP needs. The demo exports files with a watermark, but it might save you here :D

Thank you so much Oedipax for the Cineform NeoScene demo recommendation. I managed to salvage the files!!!

Neoscene could open them, one at a time only, or it would freeze and not be able to convert the files (not sure why)... I got the watermark though after a few conversions :-(...

A few more questions, if you don't mind:

a) Would you know a freeware that would do a similar job on MAC without watermark? Else I'm just going to have to buy NeoScene...

b) Do you know if any other persons in the forum have experienced similar issues with SD card reporting weird file size on MTS file (i used a class 6 which has a min transfer rate of 48Mbit/s, enough for the "stable settings" normally)? And FCP Log & Transfer and the new "stable" GH13 AVHCD settings?
If so, do you know if this will be improved on upcoming GH13 patches? I'm just worried for now to use the patch and have reverted to official FW from panasonic... yet I love the image quality I get out of GH13 which is miles better than the original GH1.

Additionally, unrelated questions to the topic, but since I'm at it...

c) I noticed is that "Remaining REC TIME" shown on my GH1 Display when recording is not accurate with the patch 3.36, it still sees the "REC TIME" as the full 2h of REC time with the new higher bitrate for FHD (or SH) on a 16GB SDHC card. Am I doing something wrong, or will there be a fix to it in the future?

d) Finally, do you know if there are any plans for allowing to shoot 720p at less than shutter speed of 60 in the GH13 future patches?
There are times, I am shooting 720p in an environment with enough lighting to use with shutter speed of 60 and say a reasonable ISO (anything less than 1000/1250), but at rare occasions, I need to shoot at 720p with shutter speeds less than 60 (I know it's not recommended and would defeat the purpose of 720p60) when lighting is really changing drastically for a few scenes on a live event, and it would be simpler/much quicker for me (so I don't have to stop recording) to not have to go to FHD and back to SH. This is quite often a scenario for me with the Kit Lens that is too slow to allow for low light shoots, but that is very useful when shooting live events.

Thank you again for everything! You saved me indeed!!! Thank you again Vitaliy and everyone in the community for all the great GH13 developments!

Cheers!!!
