GH13 and RED

Hello all.. I'm new here (both on DVX and just hacked my GH1 for the first time last night). Everyone has been a wealth of information so far! It's fantastic.

I was wondering if anyone has cut the GH13 with RED in a production before? Production company I intern with owns one, which I get to use on occasion, as well as 5d and 7d. I've seen shorts and tests on vimeo of the GH13 with the 5d and 7d, but I don't think I've come across anything with RED. If you have, I was wondering what hack settings would be preferable? Right now I only have on SD card, its a Transcend 8g class 6, but I'm planning on getting at least one more in a few weeks, a class 10 (although I'm not sure which brand or how big just yet). I also picked up the kit lens and the Panny 20mm pancake everyone seems to speak highly of.

It's been done before on few occassions here in this forum. I can't point you to any specific threads but just PM Kholi Hicks who is currently shooting a film with a Red One and a hacked GH-1 (which I'm eager to see the outcome myself).

We have intercut gh13 with Red and if the gh13 is really well lit, it looks pretty good - it's not about to cause the Red company to go out of business, far from it, but it compares well with decently lit Red footage (well lit Red wins hands down). Depends as well on what delivery you use. eg. gh13 looks better at Blu-Ray with Red than say, 2K.

If you're looking at vimeo, make sure you download the clips in 1080p and play them onto your big screen HD TV. Watching it on Vimeo isn't the same.

I don't own any of the Red footage but have been pestering my boss to make some available for vimeo. Keep you posted.

One thing is for sure, gh13 is much sharper than the canon dslrs, which look soft in comaprison.

For the sort of work I do ( underwater) the superb image quality of the GH13 opens up new possibilities of convenience in terms of getting material that will cut nicely with topside material taken with a RED or F900, etc. I really don't think there is any more good reason to lug around a massive (and expensive) underwater rig after seeing what a GH13 plus decent HIDs and a dome ported 7-14mm can do...even for producers who still insist on a more "professional" topside camera. Unless, of course, you absolutely need to deliver 4k...

Thanks that makes a lot of sense. I think we will just need to experiment a bit to see when/where we will be using each camera. I'm producing a feature that will be shot this spring, so I'm thinking a GH13 will likely be our c-cam (two mx- REDs for a/b), because I figure if I have it, I might as well use it.

Skeptikal....my goodness...that avatar. Please tell me that's photoshoped...lol.

Ha ha...it's the real thing.

No big deal since the Great Whites aren't that flexible out of the water. Underwater it's a different matter...:(
