GH1 with FD lenses and LA-7200 questions...

Just a few questions that I couldn't seem to find the answers for. I'm looking to use the GH1 with FD lenses and the LA-7200 Anamorphic adapter.

1. Will the footage be squashed in the LCD monitor? Would using a Z-Finder correct this?

2. What step up ring would I need?

3. Would I be able to use the LA-7200 with a mattebox?

Thanks in advance guys!

Yes, It would be squashed. That's why it's anamorphic. It would just be a wide angle or matte otherwise.

You need to know the thread diameter of your lenses to determine your step up. It's not always clearly marked with FDs, so choose wisely.

As long as there are threads on the front of it, I don't see why not.

The Panasonic adapter plays very nicely with Canon FDs. What's really important is your focusing distance, however, it delivers much better results when your subject is 4-10ft away- beyond that and you get weird smearing on the edges. You're also going to have to stop down past f/2.8 if you want things to be nice and sharp, it's pretty soft before you hit f/2.8 or greater. The wider the lens, you less you have to stop down.

The image will absolutely be squished on your viewfinder but you can still use MF assist to make sure you're in focus and as strange as it may seem, composing even with a squished image isn't as difficult as it might seem, you really can get used to it.

I've shot a lot of anamorphic footage for the feature I'm working on with the Panny adapter and if you follow the above rules, it looks great and I'm also using FD glass.

It'll be tough to use the adapter with a true mattebox although I'm sure it can be done - I use a Cinetactics matteblox and it works quite well. I also use circular filters on the lens itself instead of sticking filters in front of the Panny adapter.
