GH1 to 24p DVD? Some confusion..

Trying to get the best encode from GH1 native avchd to a 24p DVD...

Been messing back and forth with tmpenc, sony vegas, and CS5

Also heard that CS5 could finally handle the unwrapped 60i 1080p footage from the gh1... but I am having problems with it.

Tried laying down 1080 60i wrapped footage directly into a premiere cs5 24p timeline and render out to a 24p mpeg2 and the results were pretty ugly and slow... didn't look right.

Tried rendering a native 1080 24p GH1 file to 24p dvd mpeg2 file and it looked correct... the odd thing is, mediainfo reads the file as having 23.976 frame rate, windows player and VLC show a 29.970029.

Rendered out a test 24p DVD using CS5 encore and all looks well... 24p motion looks right on playing the DVD in both a 1080p computer screen and on an actual old 4:3 tube monitor out of a hardware DVD player. No interlaced frames anywhere or motion cadence errors.

Still... mediainfo program shows the vob files as 23.97, and VLC shows them as 29.970029... not 23.976... yet, I see no artifact frames or interlace frames and it appears to have made a correct 24p dvd. with the proper flags. I am confused at the different codec readings and if I actually made a correct 24p DVD or not.

To do this right in Encore cs5 is a little confusing because the DVD 'settings' are LOCKED at 29.97 apparently with no way to change them yet the 'output encoding settings" can be set to mpeg2 23.976 progressive dvd.

Very weird.. wonder if anyone else has issues with the proper workflow or how you are making your 24p DVDs? I also have tmpgenc author but that didn't seem to work correctly and I did see artifact and interlaced frames from it.

All in all, I was extremely impressed with the encoding done by encore cs5 when I dropped a native 1080 24p GH1 file in and had it do the mpeg2 encode qw opposed to doing it directly out of cs5 with media encoder. The quality level looked a LOT better and playing the standard widescreen DVD on a 1080p screen (blowing it up to full screen) look substantially good - almost like the HD version unless you came very close to the screen you could see the lack of detail and mpeg2 artifacts but they were fairly well masked at a normal 2x away from the screen viewing distance. I dare say a better looking standard widescreen DVD than I have ever been able to make before.

Still don't know if I have made a 'proper' 24p dvd or not though.. it appears so but I am confused as to why certain things are telling me the framerate is 23.976 and others are still reading 29.970029.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Did it play alright in the premiere timeline? Maybe try seeing if you can get it to render our properly in 24p to an I-frame codec and see if the issue is your computer decoding the MPEG-2 or something weird with your MPEG-2 settings. If that file plays fine at 24p then you're in the clear...just take that file and transcode it to MPEG-2 with Adobe Media Encoder. If it doesn't look fine then the problem with your workflow is the whole 60i to 24p thing.

Well it looks fine when I started with the hacked 24p n avchd footage - yet it is still saying it's 29.97002 in a few players... I wouldn't think it would be 30p cause it would jump and look funny.

I can't get premiere cs5 to handle the wrapped footage correctly at this time I still have to trans-code it to neoscene, but that is only for older pre-hacked footage. Since the hack i have been shooting at 24p native with no issues... beautiful footage.

But I am wondering what is the absolute way to check if it rendered an actual 24p (23.976) mpeg2 or not and then kept it correct when I authored the dvd and made the vob files.

Again it LOOKs right... it appears to play correctly on both the computer and hardware DVD players. I would thing if it had a pull down put in it I would see it on a freeze frame, which I don't.

I guess I could upload one of the vob files and you could check it out.

On a shoot today and then traveling, should have a chance to check it out at some point. I am mostly on a mac and final cut studio so I don't know how much I can help you with settings details. If it plays fine and looks fine it's probably fine.

24p authored DVD's use a 60i wrapper (29.97) to put the 24p video into just like the GH1 does. When DVD is played it extracts the 24 VOB in real-time and shows up correctly on your monitor without interlace. At least that is what George Lucas told me, maybe he's wrong.

Ok I did a little more research and think I figured it out. The mpeg 2 standards were created way before 24p video existed so the only thing in the official mpeg 2 spec is 29.97 - there is no official 23.976 mpeg 2 standard, so when you make a 23.976 mpeg 2 it puts flags in that tell it it is 29..97 ntsc (60i) even though only 24 frames per second are stored with flags, some readers see it as 29.97 and a few can see that it is 23.97 with pulldown flags.

What Encore & Tmpenc are doing is a soft pulldown flags not a hard pulldown like the dvx100 in 60i mode.

Yeah... what he said....
except correction - the GH1 actually does a 'hard' pulldown.. meaning it does have interlaced frames... the mpeg 2 dvd actually only has 24 saved pictures and doesn't have any middle pulldown frames mixed with interlace, only flags to tell players that are going out to interlace sets which frmes to repeat.

The mpeg 2 24p files were smaller size as well than actual 29.97 (60i) files.

I use Premiere CS3.

What problems would I encounter by just dropping the stock (no 24pN patch) GH1 files in the timeline?

Does Premiere interpret things properly? By properly I mean not giving me interlaced view and actually displaying the image like it should...

What about AE?

Aside from more fluid editing why else should I invest money into Neoscene?

Thanks.

Pietro, it doesn't work so as the italians say 'forgettaboutit'

You'll end up with an ugly mess. Premiere & vegas can take the 1080 files only if you use the 24p N hack with ptools on your cam. Otherwise it's neoscene , voltair , or log & tranfer for the likes of you.
