GH1 = the hdslr handycam?

is it just me or are there way too many 'home video' style videos out there with the gh1.
it seems like I don't see as much from the 7d/t2i hdslrs videos.

thoughts? discuss...

It is almost impossible to make easy home video on T2i or 7D.
Very hard and requires big skills and normally dedicated rig.

The auto-focus, optical image stabilization and easy to configure video modes make it extremely easy to pick-up and shoot any home video.

The GH1 is a high-end consumer oriented camera that a lot of people buy just to make home videos. Furthermore, a lot of people here use it for their home videos as well as real stuff. People that make home videos don't buy 7Ds and 5Ds, and we don't see many with the T2i because of how hard it is to use for such a purpose.

I have it on good authority, that the pixels in the 7d/5d cameras just plain cost more, than in the lower end cameras...

What I want to know is where is the home porn made with the GH-1 to be had...

Of course, the 'real' reason, is that the GH-1 is being sold to 'consumers' and probably pros, or wanabee pros, are the ones buying the Canon higher end cameras. As for the T2i... from what others have said, it's not easily used for video work... don't know, don't have one...

Not trying to single you out here, Ben, so don't take my quoting you as me giving you the finger or anything, but…

Having a T2i (and 5DII and 7D), and having had a GH1 (really enjoyed it, by the way) I honestly don't find any one of them easier to use than the other. In fact, I got my T2i on a Wednesday afternoon, shot this that night and posted it the next morning (not to showcase the technical merits of the camera, of course, just as a test, really)…

All of these cameras offer shooting and workflow challenges. Having used them all, I find them all about even in the "usability" area.

Just my .02.

That looks great btw! I am hungry now.

I've shot on the canons, mainly the 5D, and while it might not bother you, I know I for one can not stand the tiny unadjustable screen. The thing is an ergonomic disaster for shooting video. The T2i might be a little better since it's lighter...I've only used the 5D and the 7D. In any case the point about the GH1's market position stands. I expect we'll be seeing some homevideo type stuff from the T2i before too long as well...although I havent really seen much from the gh1 either because I don't really go looking for that.

I do feel like the GH1 (this might be a function of the kit lens) is well suited to getting both deep and shallow DOF shots, whereas I've always found the Canons a little too soft and moiré prone with deep DOF.

Agreed on the LCD screen. It's a nice thing to have on the GH1. I wouldn't go so far as to call the Canon LCDs "ergonomic disasters," but I understand what you mean.

But for me, and it may be because I had used Canon DSLRs before, the controls on the 7D, 5D and T2i just felt more logical and easy to navigate.

As for the OP's assertion that there are too many "GH1 home videos" out there, that's nonsense. The more footage people post, the more they're out shooting and not on forums talking about shooting. Shooting makes you better. Talking about shooting not so much.

good points. I just watch a lot of videos, because that is how I learn. I self teach myself almost everything...

its just when I seems to look for GH1 videos a lot of 'home video' style comes up.

Like Ben said... its easy to pick up a GH1 and start shooting pretty good video...

Also at the price point you are going to see more amateurs using it over a 7d/5d. The t2i just came out... give it a while we will see all the ridiculous home videos.

On that note, what are you expecting? all feature films when you search?

I did run into this video... and understand what your saying http://vimeo.com/10790289

I'm not looking to find feature films all the time. It's just that when I researched the cam I was going to get, I saw that the GH1 was the only cam to have full manual controls. Which is why I wanted to get it, to be able to use it as a main video cam for my short films. I figured more people would be doing that also, but It seems the video ratio is off. Its pretty much like my hv30... lots off crappy made, but good looking, home videos and the few great feature shorts.

But I do realize that its auto features including autofocus during recording makes it easy for the average person to point and shoot.

Well its really up to you (or whoever) to make a good film. People can make homevideo looking crap on a RED but obviously you won't see that cuz of the cost and "hassle" of using it. I've seen amazing stuff shot on ur hv30, same with the gh1. So its really up to the user. The points everybody made though contributes to the more homevideo looking stuff.

If u have the chance go look for "dispatch", a film shot for the dvxuser monsterfest. I think there also was another one ...a black and white kinda noire film in that fest that looked amazing! And when u know those were shot on the gh1 u'll see its def about who is shooting. (I'm on my phone so I can't bother to find those links :) to give you)
