Got my GH1 today! (arrived under 12 hours from shipping!) and I freaking LOVE IT!

Went out and shot a bunch of stuff today, not the best, still learning the camera, didn't have any filters with me or anything like that. All of it is un-color-corrected and quite raw.

Shot at 720p AVCHD. 60 shutter, all sorts of ISOs. (we had REALLY low light in some of the shots)

Enjoy! (i sure did!)

What do you mean it arrived under 12 hours from shipping? From whom did you order?

Now off to check out your footage

.

something i realized when shooting this, i thought i had read you weren't supposed to shoot 720p at a shutter slower than 60. so shot it all at 60 and the movement of the people is way too jumpy. i did a test today at 720 in 30 shutter and it looked great (59.94fps) so i think i'll just stick to 30 shutter from now on unless its crazy action times. (the 720 30 shutter even conformed to slow mo, no problems)

You know, if you're shooting 720p AVCHD, then the 1/30 shutter speed causes the camera to duplicate frames. In effect, you're actually shooting 720p30, not 720p60.

oooh i see. so if i'm doing slowmo 720 i should put it at 60 shutter, but for regular stuff in 720 30 is fine and will still convert into 23.98 and look normal.

You should shoot 1/100, 1/120 or higher for slowmo. 30 is also a bit low for normal speed footage. I'd shoot 1/40, 1/50, or 1/60.

i guess my issue with 1/60 for normal footage is that it just looked way too jumpy for my tastes of people sitting around talking.

The 720p/60 should look normal when dropped into a 24fps timeline. I wonder how 30p will react since it's doing double frames...

anyway you want to shoot 1/60 for 24 fps because it's the closest to 1/48

Man, that looks great. I would have to say that even looks better than what my HVX would shoot. Just my humble opinion of course.

This will go away once you convert your footage to 24p. If you use a shutter below 1/60 it will look more filmic without any conversion (due to really being 30p) but will not convert well to 24p (converting 30p to 24p doesn't work well, 60p to 24p works better because you have more information to extract the 24 frames from and replicate the 24p motion). There is a thread about this in the GH1 forum. Search for shooting 60p for 24p

yes but the problem is, if you look at the video i posted, it was shot 720p 60fps and converted to 24fps and edited as such, and what i'm saying is that it STILL doesn't look right, its too jumpy for normal interaction, good for action but not SRS stuff.

By the way, 1/30 shutter speed is not "filmic" because it's not what a film camera is capable of doing. One of the aspects of the dreaded "video look" is a shutter speed slower than 1/48. You really should be shooting at 1/60, especially since it's closer to 1/48 than 1/30 is.

I don't understand why you would consider 1/60 in 60p mode to be too stuttery. The problem of stutter only occurs with low frame rates, such as 24 fps. At 60 fps, 1/60 should be smooth enough. Perhaps your computer is dropping frames during playback?

also, i will be going to the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz location tonight with my camera for the Michael Jackson sing-along, hopefully will be a good chance for some low-light testing!

Hey Paul,

Watched your first GH1 vid. Very nice.

Watched it on my 57" Hitachi RPTV....wow. Very filmic footage. Some shots were noticably "video"...for example, the approach down the boulevard to the ?capitol building? (guessing about that domed structure). Otherwise I really like what I saw. The ramping between 60p and ?30p/24p? was sweet.

Noticed some serious stairstepping around 1:37 (the shoot up the office tower with the traffic standard in the foreground) Is that the render to .mov or is that in the original footage?

Thanks again for the footage. Looking forward to your low-light test.

sincerely,

ian

Paul - you're in Austin?
Me too! Check out my GH1 stuff in the sig.
What folks are saying is right though
720 60p at 1/60th for 24p
720 60p at 1/120th for slow mo.
Something is going on if the shutter doesn't look close to right in a 24p time line. The motion might be jumpy but that's because the NLE is throwing away frames.
And probably never 720 60p below 1/60th - you force your camera into a self hack when you do that because it's mathmatecally impossible as it would create a shutter greater than 360º to have it move slower than your frame rate. A lot of this shutter / rate stuff is gone over in my thread.

Tomorrow I'll have up a frame rate / post conversion to 24p test up (I swear). We shoe mounted a GH1 to the top of a 170 so we would constantly have a reference point to real 24p then I split the screen so you can compare the movement of the GH1 converted to 24p in various ways alongside the movement of the 170.

Okay.

Despite learning the damn camera. Great Job, man! The stills are great. One or two were a bit out of focus. But you're learning! Great Job man.

My little thought on the focus. At least this is what I do. Pull back from you subject. Zoom in just a little. Try focusing light on the subject. Tweak the shutter and contrast. You should be fine. Then again. That's how I would fix that.
