The Steadicam Pilot would be overkill. The GH1 is too small and light. The Merlin would probably work better. You'd rely on the on-board LCD, which does show what you're shooting. It's just like using a small camcorder with a built-in LCD.
I talk about the pilot because I need one for my HVX 200 and I just wonder how it match with the GH1
The merlin is too "small" to use with the HVX and I don't want to have two stabilisers
sorry for my english
All Steadicams are basically the same in principle. I don't see why using the GH1 with the Pilot would be a problem. Other people have used the Canon 5D Mark II with even larger Steadicam rigs.
I still don't see what's so hard to understand about the monitoring issue. The GH1 not only has a screen that displays the live image while recording, but the LCD can also be adjusted to any angle that you need. "Manage without picture monitoring?" There IS monitoring. You're not flying blindly.
Look into Camera Motion Research's Blackbird stabilizer. It has a similar design to the Merlin, costs slightly less, and handles a higher payload. There are many fans of it already, including here at DVXuser.
Another option is the Merlin plus the arm and vest kit. The arm and vest are actually exactly the same as the ones on the Pilot. The whole package costs significantly less than a Pilot, and plus you'll have the option of detaching the Merlin so that you can have a more minimal rig when flying something small like the GH1.
