GH1 Shipping Today! According to Panasonic Sales Rep

Although I might be admitting a bit of of ignorance, can anybody point me to a place where I can begin to learn what some of these things mean? Not just deffinitions, but the whys and hows too. What is a pulldown and how and why is it removed? How and why would I want to drop an FCP timeline? I know what a codec is but what is a 10x codec? Is it ten codecs or just one codec that is ten times as fast?

What I am really asking for is a tutorial that can help an experienced still photographer begin to understand some of the techniques for video with a GH1. Is there one on this site? If not, is there some other place to begin?

Well you can learn a ton of stuff about Pulldown if you google for information on the DVX-100 -- the original camera this site was founded around. It was the first kind of prosumer-level camera to have 24P.

Wikipedia Has a little info too. That's far from all you need, but it's a start...
 
I'm right there with everybody on waiting and I see everybody coming up with conclusions for this horrible wait but... it sure beats the hell out of those poor people waiting on the scarlet cause daaaaaaaaaaaamn. All I'm sayin'... I need it like the next guy. I took a gamble to make some cha-ching here.

man i had such a bad headache earlier today that all i could do was make one post here then charge the battery and rest.

thanks for all the congrats i got earlier, wish i didn't have that headache cause i would've been way more excited than i was. but yaaaaa keep the faith the gh1's are coming. seems like this week is the week, keep ur eye on that b+h site too.
 
Arrived home to lens adaptor and variable ND filter. It really is like Christmas in July for me. I hope it quickly turns into Christmas in July for the rest of you too! Christmas in August would stink, and Christmas in September?
 
It was like Christmas in July all day for me!

But I just went out with the dog and shot some footage of him laying around for practice, only I can't edit any of it because Vegas 7 doesn't support AVCHD. My bad, I thought I was shooting mjpeg.

By the way, any of you who are still waiting, download the PDF of the manual and look over a few times, I was lost at first. After 6 years of shooting on a DVX I should have known Panasonic would change things up on me.
 
hrmmm... so now post GH1 purchases.

first i think i really need ND filter of some sort. thennnn extra battery? probably yes.

is this an order from Panasonic?
 
so, got mine yesterday. psyched, but I have to say, there is a bit of a learning curve for me. still trying to figure out what everything does/means and how to get good stable video.

what I really wanted to note was, I checked my firmware, new GH1's are shipping with firmware 1.1 pre-installed.

so there you go.
 
Have not heard too much from people who have ordered a GH1 from Amazon. I am still waiting, since May 7th !! No news at all. (Sorrow)
 
To the 6th person who has asked -- no my order is from iBuyDigital.com, a Manhattan scam shop.

I never received an email invoice from them, so I had the lady send me one today.

This place really is a scam.

I'm not going to howl too loud, because I should have my camera today and that's pretty good, but they smooth-talked me into buying a battery, and guess what they did? On the invoice they added the battery to the camera kit, and invoiced the "Battery" as $0.00 -- I have a hunch that this is going to make it impossible to "return" the battery after it fails to work with the firmware update. (Which I was promised I could returned it if I found it didn't work).

Then "Shipping" was free, but "Handling & Insurance" was $39


Amazing.

I read about a lot of other scams these people pull, but nobody had mentioned this kind of billing trickery.


Like I said, under the circumstances I'm not complaining...the cost ended up being about the same as if I'd ordered from B&H or J&R with over night shipping, just sharing their interesting tactics in case anybody else will be amused by them I guess.

I'm a bit lost. You said it was scam but you still got GH1 from them? that's more like a god send. I was afraid to buy from them because of bad reseller rating but it looks like they actually have the camera?

They don't. I would not order from them at this point. I am pretty sure they're getting the cameras from Canada, we'll see when I get home (Late tonight) and see whether my camera has a valid US warranty or not. Their price used to match the US price, but they've increased their price...if I were ordering today, I'd be calling Canada.

I agree that it's luck that I am getting a camera, but I took a risk from ordering from them. We'll have to see how it plays out, but I have a hunch they're going to try and leave me holding $120 worth of charges that I don't want to pay. If that's the case, we'll play the charge dispute game with the CC Company, and see how that plays out. Been an adventure for sure, and the adventure is just starting!

Ok. Thanks. Seems like a lot of hassle to order from them, what a joke. Hopefully you'll be getting GH1 not a brick in a box.
