GH1 running time is?

I'm confussled. Page 19 of the dpreview site says the GH1 has a "running time" of 12 minutes at 1080p. What does that mean? The camera stops at 12 minutes? I'd like to be able to videotape my friend's various rock and funk band shows... but not if it means a bunch of chopped up video segments with missing frames whenever the camera stops.

Please unconfussle me.

Thanks!

Nope. Runtime is dependent on battery life and the size of your SDHC card. Perhaps Dpreview is referring to the 2gig limit when shooting in mjpeg mode which nets you about twelve minutes of shooting time.

if u are in a pal country i believe that is the time limit of 1 continuous shot. it's because of an EU tax law

dpreview says the "running time" is:

12 min for 1080p
18 min for 720p
24 min for VGA

So these limitations only refer to EU versions of the camera, and not North American ones... correct?

Also: does going tapeless mean pretty well zero dropped frames? Or does the camera still drop frames occasionally, perhaps because the buffer can't keep up, or the scene gets too complex or whatever. I could easily talk myself into getting a GH1 if I knew my days of dropped frames and missing video were over.

Hmmm... That's weird. I don't know about DPreview, but we have seen firsthand that in the AVCHD modes, the camera records up to the capacity of the card. It doesn't stop recording after a certain amount of time.

Tapeless does not mean zero dropped frames. Frames may be dropped for different reasons, possibly having to do with the buffer. But, AFAIK, we haven't seen a frame-dropping issue with the GH1 so far.

Dropped frames on the GH1 have been discussed several times. There's even a utility to check for it.

OK, thanks. Yes, I do remember seeing the threads about sometime ago... just slipped my mind...

It records until your battery or SD card run out.
And for the EU it's 29 minutes and 29 seconds
