Total noob here so please have mercy. Not sure if Ive even posted in the right spot  so I just bought a gh1 because I cant wait for the eventual release of the gh2.So Im getting myself educated on this stuff and come to find out that the newer cameras cant be hacked:(I got mine from a woman on ebay and her invoice says it was sold in mid september 2010.Is there anyway to know if the hack will work ?How do I find the build date? Also I got the 14-140 lense because I figured it would be a good all purpose lense but its high f value and slow focusing may not get me the results I want .I gather I need something with low mm and f value.Any recommendations would be helpful.also any other generall advice you think a noob might need would be welcome
Thanks for all replys:)

Looks like you may have jumped the gun - GH2 preorders are expected to ship in 14 days or so. I have a bone stock GH1 with 14-140 lens and I haven't noticed that it is slow to focus. It may hunt from time to time, but it's far better than any other m4/3 lens in this regard. I love my 20mm pancake lens, and it IS slower to focus and has a noisy focus motor, but it's still the best wide & fast AF lens for the GH1.

There are quite a few great posts on getting up and running with your GH1; take a look or search through the various forums and I'm sure you'll find most of the answers you seek.

I have an unhacked GH-1, that could be hacked as I bought it nearly a year ago... I have the 14-140mm and other than the slow speed, I've had no real issue with it. The only issue I've had with the AF is in 'movie mode' where the AF-Single doesn't 'stick', but slowly 'hunts' if the framing is changed relative to the original focus object. That requires a change to 'manual focus'. I've recently used the AF-Continuous option for a situation where the object of interest was moving, but I've not looked at the footage in detail to see how 'fast' the tracking on focus was.

I may upgrade to the GH-2 and then hack my GH-1, but I don't know if I'll have the money, unless there's a 'body only' option for the GH-2.
