GH1 Noob Questions and help w/ firmware settings please

you know, as much as I think cavemandude can come off as a little snarky, i agree with him. now, maybe the 10 bux was an incentive, and blackout was joking, but still, it shouldn't really go beyond that. a lot of people've put some effort and work and it's getting unnoticed with threads like this.

I don't see how answering his questions took away from anyone else's work or effort and if again you are referring to tester13, what more do you want me to do I have sung nothing but praise, suggested people support his efforts... do I need to rent a plane and fly a banner about it? Anyway he is forever connected to the GH1 now you can't search it without him coming up with it.

Its got nothing to do with you 'taking away from anyone else's work'. Its got to do with you taking money for the passing of information on a site that is all about the free passing of information.

I agree with cavemandude. If you wanted to do it fine but do it privately.

What would happen if dozens of BMw's start posting the same offer. A slippery slope brother. You just aren't capable of seeing it.

if folks werent such snobs about answering questions there would be no reason to offer incentives to answer a few simple questions. Blackout gave me just what i needed 2 get rolling and saved me a lot of frustration and weather he wanted $$ or not i offered and i payed up because i keep my word.

im new @ this HD video thing and i really dont want minor technical details holding me back from things i'd like to try.

Now that the thread has seemed to veer off topic, I would like to assist it back on its way with a small simple addition to answer one of the OP's original questions in the first post:

As for MJPEG mode, you will have shorter recorder times because MJPEG files a quite larger than AVCHD due to the compression. Thus, the video is taking up much more space on your SD card hence resulting in less record time than AVCHD.

seems kinda backwards to me since AVCHD is the hq mode, but makes sense. thx.

There really needs to be a gh13 hack forum for newbies. Otherwise, this is a recipe for a harsh forum, where a lot of good people with good information will be afraid to post. A lot of people (self included) simply want their consumer grade GH1 to take phenomonally-better video for playing around and everyday stuff. However, dvxuser is loaded with die-hard professionals who get irritated (and somewhat understandibly) with basic newbie questions as they fine tune their art. So, separate forum for hack newbies. Seems simple to me.

snobs? really? how do you think blackout obtained his information? or the guy who told blackout before him. sorry buddy, you're a little misinformed on how a lot of people around here communicate. you didn't even post in forums for basic questions you went straight to making a thread offering money to the first cat who jumped in providing some basic answers. i'm not even a stickler for helping people out, even the redundant, "how do i update my camera" inquiry every other post, but you, you went to straight calling members snobs because they didn't march in to help the second you clicked submit post. you went off the deep end with that assertion man. BMW..heh, no wonder.

A section in this forum has already been created for "newbies" to post questions.

Let's see within your first 5 posts, you call people here snobs, you offer money for info because you think the threads here are crappy, you mention female genitals and what to do with it. Why would anyone here want to help someone that just joined this forum with that kind of attitude towards it right off the bat? Well, Blackout would be he doesn't count.

hacking your own personal camera IS NOT illegal (you can do anything you want to it once you own it - even smash it with a hammer if you like)

the exchange of money for info between two adults is also fine... it would be unnaceptable if blackout's first response was "ill tell you for $10" but since the OP offered; its understandable that he said it because he didnt want someone coming on here and telling him to read through tester13s 300 page thread (it would however be silly if this was a trend that started and became so that people started to expect payment)

I toyed around with canopus neo 2 booster before the hack, because I wanted a way to deal with native footage and remove pulldown... but.. it didn't work, even though man was it smooth with the AVCHD footage.. much smoother than Sony Vegas or Premiere CS4/5 is... not that it is horrible... but neo booster 2 was like butter and the other programs can chunk up here or there on native avchd even on a total decked out new machine.

I have not toyed with it since the tester13 hack.. I have been mostly using vegas...

I only had the trial of neo booster 2 and I didn't buy it because it did not correctly deal with the footage natively like it claimed and even the enginners gave up on the GH1... but now, it might be worth it to give another go with the 24p n ticked in the hack...

BUT....

Color looks so much better to me out of vegas... I get better encodes out of vegas...
the last youtube video I did.. I have NEVER gotten a HD youtube video encode this clean up from ANY camera:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO_h_Irqn_4&hd=1

Make sure you watch that in 1080p on a 1080p screen.... and I really got almost no macro blocks in the compression at all, which is usually a big problem with youtube 1080p.

ONLY the vegas encode was that clean.. the mpeg4 encode out of cs5 media encoder at the same settings did not fair nearly as well... I should have left it up for comparison but I didn't like it and I deleted it and redid it in vegas.

BMW..heh, no wonder.
:-Laugh(DBG): I'll admit, I thought the same thing...

But really I think the issue here is that BMW sees the forum as a resource for himself (albeit a messy one) in which he's free to roll up, plop down some money, get his, and get out, whereas the more serious contributors see it as a more egalitarian community project.

And yeah, BMW, I know it was your first post, but clearly, based on your later replies ("if folks werent such snobs about answering questions there would be no reason to offer incentives to answer a few simple questions"), you already had the idea in your head that DVXUser was filled with snobs who hate answering simple questions. And making sexist/derogatory remarks afterwards isn't helping you at all, either.

I personally don't think Blackout did anything all that wrong and I did get the sense from his post that he didn't really care but would take the money if the OP was serious.

One thing that you're probably missing out on, BMW, is that Vitaliy (he's the guy responsible for this wonderful firmware hack) has often expressed dismay at how many "dummies" (his usual word, and yes it applies to you!) jump in without reading anything or contributing anything. It's a work-in-progress and not yet intended for actual use and if you do use it for that it's at your own risk. The fear is that people will see it as a product, rather than what it is, a hack, and come back demanding support from DVXUser once their $10 "ScanDisk" card errors out and loses their "client's" super-critical video.
