Gh1 Merlin steadicam settings / recipe

Dear all,

I am quite new in the stabilized shoot area and I wonder if some of you can share their settings /recipes with our great GH1 cam . To be honnest, I just try to balance mine and have some difficulties... I am always approaching but never found the correct balance. Maybe some of you can share some tricks/advices ?

The best settings results I have found are in the video below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvMS70MyI-g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&v=l3Q5A3hWjpY

but the user is using a quick shoe and a special pedestal to set it up... Nice but as I wish to be as lightweight as possible for travelling (otherwise I wouldn't have bought a merlin!!!)

Otherwise I have found these settings in the following video
http://vimeo.com/6272661

GH1 + stock lens (+ low profile quick release)
Front: |)
Bottom: ||)
Arc: -1
Stage: -2
Gimbal position: 32mm
Z: -5

http://vimeo.com/6416669

Front Weights = 1 mid, 1 finish
- Lower Weights = 1 mid, 1 finish
- Arc Size = 28 cm (11'')
- Mt Hole = M
- Stage Mark = -1.25
- Z = -3

These 2 gives quite good results as seen in the video but I have tried with the lightest GH1 + kit 14-140 mm (=no sunshield, no cap and no accessories) but didn't be able to balance it perfectly again...

Tried also the formula in the excel spreadsheet found in the cookbook http://www.merlincookbook.com/formula.php with 888g for a "naked" GH1 and a vert center of gravity at 40.00mm (my estimation ).
All the results seems to approach the good balance but still have some tiny oscillations that give everyshoot a sea feeling...

The merlin cookbook with GH1 give non satisfactory results...

I have put some gaffer tape on the merlin plate in order to increase stability but no success...

Do you have any idea, advice, recipe in order to have it correctly balanced? Is naked GH1 too light ? Am I doing something wrong ? Is my merlin not 100% working (I just feel that the lower arm is loose even with all the screw strongly fixed)...

Thanks all for your kind assistance and happy shooting with GH1 (even if GH2 is very near but I am not sure we will have such a revolution with GH1... maybe GHxxx?)

Regards

Steph
