gh1 lcd ghosting?

Hi I love my gh1 but one of my only issues is that it seems like my gh1 LCD screen has some ghosting issues or more like it has a slow refresh rate. When I compare it to my friends 5dmk2's screen the 5dmk2 blows it away as in quality and refresh rate. I still like the gh1 screen better because of the articulating lcd though.

Before I thought I could live with it but its been annoying me as of late especially when shooting action in low light and high contrast conditions.

By the way none of the problems i see in the LCD screen do not show up in the footage when put on the computer.

Ive been searching online and in these forums every so often to see if anyone has the same issue or is even complaining about the screen and it seems like everyone loves the screen and is having no problems.

am I being picky? or do i have a bad lcd screen?
should the refresh rate of the screen be that bad compared to the 5dmk2? hmmm

It's all relative, I guess. The LCD on my Canon G7 was terrible - I didn't know how bad until the GH1 arrived. I was starting to suspect that it was poor, when I would catch a view of someone else's LCD in public, and wonder why the image looked so much smoother than mine. The GH1's pixel count and refresh rate are way beyond the G7.

Having said that, the GH1's LCD starts to lag in low light, to the point that it almost becomes a slideshow instead of a video. The image and refresh are outstanding in daylight. Mega OIS causes some pretty interesting stuttering effects, too.

The 5dmk2 has a much higher pixel count than the GH1, and better low light sensitivity, which probably contribute to the better LCD image (not sure about the refresh rates of either camera).

hmm yeah I was thinking it may have been an issue due to the computer working too hard but I'm using a manual lens and turned off most features especially the "auto" features but I still get some nasty ghost like effects on the screen.

also, its not really the pixel count really that im worried about, I know the 5d has a better screen but with all the ghosting, it makes focusing that much more difficult when you subject is slightly moving.

bump.

just want to see one last time if anyone else has problems with the screen. this screen is even worse than the hvx200+redrock/cinevate setup i had...worse than my 40d, dvx100a, hell dare I say even better than my Leica D-LUX? which is a point and shoot cam..

the blacks are the most noticable when they "smear" or ghost on the screen but not on the pc once imported. and no its not appearing because I am "looking very closely". You can notice the ghosting/smearing right when you turn on the camera.

thanks again to anyone that may give me input.

In case it wasn't clear, I was agreeing with you. I just don't find it to be very objectionable, and it's only bad in low light. Are you saying that your lcd ghosts in daylight, too?

The LCD switches to some sort of night mode when it is dark. In that mode you get the ghosting. I think it is a good thing to be able to see where you are lining up your shot or photograph. Also this doesn't reflect what the actual sensor records when you hit record or take your snap. That brings me to my other point, it is after all an HDSLR. You can't lose sight that this is an HDSLR and most of the mechanics are designed for still photography on these things at this time. You can't expect to get the same functionality from the GH1 as you do the HVX200 like you pointed out.

I tried panning quickly across a bright subject, and I could see a slight lag, or stutter, in vertical lines as I moved (it looks like a refresh issue). I think, because you've been able to compare the GH1 to something better (which I can't do), your more critical of the LCD's performance. Something else occurred to me; the LiveView LCD viewfinder exhibits a 'color wheel' effect (like a DLP projector), as you quickly shift your eyes left and right across the image. I assume you're not talking about that effect (which is documented in the manual).

bekrawa thanks for the input but no it is not that issue but I do notice it more when i pan side to side compared to tilting up and down.

well one example is when I was shooting in the day and my subject was wearing black and even when i pan left and right very slowly you can see it ghost. its almost like a smearing effect. This happens in all sorts of exposure conditions....properly exposed, overexposed but shows up the most in the blacks when something is underexposed even in bright daylight.

to tell you the truth I didn't care so much about this issue until it became apparent that it made it a lot more difficult to manually focus on something moving or if i was moving.

thanks for the help so far everyone

Hi,

I just was outside testing my glidecam when I noticed this ghosting.
First I feared that it was the codec but as I filmed in 720p and I didn´t do fancy pans or anything I remembered reading this thread.

So yes, you´re not alone. It´s on the display only, the footage is clean.

So what now? I think I´ll write to Panasonic about that. It is very disturbing to see and while shooting you really should have other concerns on mind than deciding if it´s mud or just you display losing it :)

thanks for the comment, you confirmed my fears I suppose.

oh well, i was hoping mine was defective so i can send it back in. I still love the GH1 but I was so excited about the articulating screen that this somewhat ruins it especially for a run and gun type shooting which I felt like what this cam was made for.

um I guess I cant wait till the gh2? hahaha.
Well, about the other concerns this really is the biggest issue to me at the moment since I've already had years worrying about other things but of course I am still learning as I go.

ugh....bad engrish.

Yeah, we encountered this a few times too, and it scares you to death, but in fact it's not actually affecting the footage, just the LCD itself.
