First day out testing with the LA7200 anamorphic lens.

BITS A LIKE... 9-12 seconds and 40-48 seconds.

BITS I DONT LIKE... everything else :o)

i had a sore neck from sleeping oddly so i only shot about 10 mins worth, thats the reason this is pretty poor... also i'm just learning :o) so please don't be to harsh.

GH1 hacked C settings
14-140 kit lens @ about 18mm+
LA7200 anamorphic lens

glasgow city centre
sunshine!
a sore neck!
lots of hideous moire!

i used the "mishandled negative" preset in MBL for a quick jazz up! i was too tired to go through and tweak the settings for each clip so a quite a few of them are way over saturated in the blacks.

track by MF DOOM - CHANGE THE BEAT

comments, questions & disses welcome! :o)

Looks cool - love the anamorphic look. I'm from Glasgow myself so know the area well. Shame you didn't include any ned wildlife... they would jazz up the scenes no end (though they would possibly steal your GH1). :furious3:

BTW - you got a trust fund or something? 2 anamorphic lenses, DSLR rig with follow focus, CS5 and magic bullet looks.... where do people get the cash for this stuff??

:D jealous :D

haha yeah i did get asked by a pail faced guy in a pair of air max, beige knit, 3 stripe joggers and a big scar on his face if i wanted to take his pic?... i laughed and then he said... it would be the best photo i would have taken all day!
he probably would have been right, but when i clocked him my cam was already half in my bag, good on his eagle eyes to spot it... and my eagle'r eyes to spot him coming!

i wish id shot more of a certain feel of stuff, the video is a mix of stuff that clash i feel, another time il think about it more.

alot of working + no time to spend any = savings / gh1, ff, anamorphic lens = me happy & alot less money!

+ i dont drink or go out (most peoples financial downfall)

LoL! You gotta love those neds!

Fair play to you re your work ethic - sounds like you deserve all this gear!

Now if you could only shoot something truly awesome in Glasgow city centre like this.....

It might all be worth it. (Shot on a crappy camera phone - I think... but possibly the addition of an anamorphic lens wouldn't add much to it.)

isn't that robbie williams?

yeah luckily he was one of the alright ones, alot of neds are actually pretty fair, id just never trust one lol.

I could be wrong but I'm wondering if the adapter wasn't "square" on some of these shots - look at 0:38, looks it it isn't quite square...am I wrong?

hey thisisapocalypse

yeah your right it does look a touch skewed towards the top left corners, i hadn't noticed that. the previous shot looks to be the same, its tricky to square up the LA7200 by eye.

the street is a slight hill tho so might add to it.

thanks for the advice  il be more aware for this next time.

pretty much the only shot i like is between 9-12 secs, watching it all back a few times i'm starting to learn what works and what doesn't, i guess this is the way to do it, get it wrong a few times, identify why it is wrong/doesn't work and that will hopefully lead you to being right one day.

Martin Oller does ano make moire worse? may i ask what is "ano"?

I like the crushed contrast look of the footage, but I'm wondering if it was an artistic choice or the result of shooting at high f-stops with the LA7200?

artistic choice of course... by that i mean i preferred that drag & drop preset
its a bit to jerry bruckheimer i think... all i needed was will smith to walk past.

Probably the question should be stated as follows: Do anamorphic lenses make moire more pronounced?

I suppose yes, since they reduce horizontal FOV into the narrower one, so even larger subjects can produce moire effect. It's somehow strange that it happens to horizontal lines, though.

i feel very silly now  (in scotland "ano" is slang for "i know")

crunchy's answer seems logical.

this may sound ghetto... but heres how i did "free" cinemascope. take 16:9 video. during pp, display safe margine box lines. adjust vertically. use crop option when exporting. chop off top and bottom pixels. voila. 2.35:1 ratio video. sometimes it works. sometimes not.

yeah a quick crop works a treat! i was going to get a screen protector and mark out safe lines so id be aware of the crop when shooting but i had some cash to invest.

il be still using the crop technique for DOF shots that i cant get with the anamorphic.

i guess i'm half sucker/half investor!

a sucker for buying one when i can do a nice quick crop as you mentioned.

a investor as it is a great lens for getting the extra width unachievable with a crop, and id imagine for the next few years the lens will hold its value... hopefully... if not i'm just a plain old fool

i also like the look the lens can give, plus real flares! altho the synthetic flares the guy is doing in after effects do look great, i wonder if they behave like real light interactive flares or are they just dropped on anywhere... that would be kind of like creating a CGI fighter jet flying backwards.

apples fall down, not up

Looks pretty slick, would have liked to see some epic anamorphic flares and the grading was indeed a bit too much for my taste.
Kudos for using DOOM, I'm a big fan myself.

yeah it was all shot at f4 upwards, i think i did venture right up to f22 tho, is that bad?

i had to take it right up as the sun was aiming right at me on some shots, i couldn't put an ND filter on it as theres no thread, i've got a fader so cant go in between either :o(

i kinda just play about with it until it looks ok, i don't pay that much attn. to the numbers when i get in a zone

most of the crushed contrast comes from the magic bullet looks preset, i don't really like the look that much either OETAM but it was just a quickie and it semi worked so i rolled with it.

OETAM yeah doom's a master of his craft, most people don't get it but those people probably swallow whats fed to them.

follow the light, the light is your guide! album: king geedorah (check it out if u've not already)

a quick sample for any future MF DOOM fans!

Have you tried the LA 7200 on any other lenses?

I've been interested in slapping it on my 20mm Pancake for low light stuff. However I've read here aswell as elsewhere that you have to shoot at slower f/stops like 4ish or higher while using the LA. If that's the case then I'm not nearly as interested in throwing the LA on the pancake anymore as my main motivator was low light.

The moire must come from setting up your editing software incorrectly. I've used a ISCO 36 on a hacked GH1 with a nikon 50mm 1.8 and it gets rid of any artifacts present in a full 1080p frame.
